I have a pretty 'complicated' medical case but the VA continues to refuse at times to even consult with me despite internal VA referrals for the consults. They also refuse to refer me to anyone who possibly CAN help-- or the Mission Act options don't have any providers for the care needed within hours of me. Then they refuse to cover many of the meds that outside specialists suggest, costing me >$3,000 per year out-of-pocket. Is this OK at any level and would anyone have any suggestions for how to get the needed care? This way preceeded COVID-19 issues but continues despite it. I've been told the doctors won't even agree to a telehealth or video health consult at the VA across a few departments and programs. I'd already involved a senator's office a few years back and have made almost no progress. Help, please?

I'll let you in on a little secret. The VA is NOT your friend. It's just a paycheck for them. As the administrator at a SW hospital stated. "They should take the vets behind the hospital and shoot them". The VA let him retire 2 weeks early. How embarrassing. I could write a book.

They cannot deny you care, you can find out who it is that is denying you that care and start a list of names at that particular VA to show who they are. I’ve worked at the VA for eight years now, the only way they can deny you care at a location is if they flag you for disruptive behavior. They can outsource you or send you to another VA, but they cannot deny you care.

Theoretically, if you're a 100%-er, the VA is obligated to treat ANY condition that you might have. Including ailments that are NOT related to your initial service-connected conditions.
I'm 100% service-connected disabled due to my collection of Agent Orange illnesses (Ischemic heart disease, Parkinsons Disease, prostate cancer and peripheral neuropathy) and the VA has covered/treated a variety of other conditions that I've had since receiving my rating (including dental implants, lower back problems, dermatology conditions, etc.).
And if my local VA facility doesn't have provisions for the treatment of non-service-connected conditions, they have always managed to adequately outsource the treatment to nearby civilian medical providers.
Perhaps I've just been lucky, but I would suggest that you do everything you can to get the VA to provide the treatments and medications that you're legally entitled to.

I didn't read anything about you being honorably discharged, or your service. I only read complaints. The VA is the best in my book and I don't hang out with sick people and always practice good hygiene. Seems like you're trying to get free money

You could call Secretary of the Veterans Affairs. Then try the POTUS ,.The VA has always tried not to do surgery because it cuts in to their budget.

THANKFULY I have not had that issue.
I do have some questions. that only you know the answer to
you do not have to give me the answer, but I believe you will understand why I ask
are you retired from your Military Service?
did you get medical Retirement,? or did you Retire after 20 plus years of service ?
Seeing how you are 100% disable , are you on SS ,and receiving Medicare? I know not everyone who is 100% gets on SS, that why I ask.
what state do you live in , I know different states different rules & Benefits

I myself Live in FL. so far, I have never been Denied to receive or seek outside Medical care ,
I recommend you go to your state VA Benefits website & go to the VA website, to find out what the rules are for your situation, for the State & VA in your state.

for example I know I had to travel to the state of Oklahoma , in order to help my brother out with his VA Disability issue, the VA personal were telling my Brother he was not eligible for certain benefits, so I went in with my brother, with a copy of the state & VA Benefit rule book , the look on there faces were priceless, because the VA Personal clamed they did not know this information, my response was don't you even read your own rules and regulations , or talk to a supervisor ?
it is sad that the so called experts are so wrong, so often.

it even Sadder when someone like me has to educate them, for I know nothing
until I need to figure it out.
I sometimes wonder if the VA personal are claiming Ignorance on purpose?

that being said, I recommend you educate yourself as much as possible, on VA rules and regulations, so please do your own research, or contact the DAV, VFW, or American Legion Rep, & some states even have a Veteran Rep at city hall to help veterans out , with your situation,
to help you with this research, & to go with you to speak on your behalf .

maybe I was just Lucky, but then again I never asked the VA for permission for anything, I just Would contact the Doctor office & asked if they accept Tricare for life? if the answer was yes, I made a Appointment.

When I got SS, I also was put on Medicare with Tricare for life as Secondary , that meant what ever Medicare did not pay for my treatment, Tricare picked up & paid the difference, so now I ask a doctor if they accept Medicare & Tricare for life as the Secondary insurance, if they accept Medicare & Tricare for life , great I make a appointment.
I have yet to receive a bill from any doctor saying I owed them money.
I also have never asked the VA for permission to see a outside Doctor, I just do it.
that may backfire on me one day, but so far I have not had a issue.
I wish you the best of Luck, please keep us posted on your results and what worked and what did not work, so we can pass that information to other with a similar situation.

This is the big lie about the federal government and the VA system. They tout how they love veterans, and it’s their job to take care of them when in reality, their job is throwing them under the bus, casting them off, they would rather give money, healthcare and a place to live to an illegal alien and to help provide for people who serve their country honorably and without question.

The " [login to see] " is as useless as a hemorrhoid in your rectum, I have written to him 57 times never a response, the VA is a terrible agency that cares less than zero for the veteran more interested in keeping funding to keep their jobs than caring for the veteran If you believe the crap in this column God bless you! I am a 100% disabled veteran and for decades have found the VA care s NOTHING ABOUT OR FOR THE VETERan, so WAKE UP you are on your own period

I read many of the comments and like others have mentioned. Contact the White House and make a formal Presidential Complaint. I used to have to respond to these and I always had a time limit. I pray that you get the treatment you deserve
