Can the VA refuse to treat a 100% service-connected veteran citing their case as "too complex," and also refuse to outsource them for care?

I have a pretty 'complicated' medical case but the VA continues to refuse at times to even consult with me despite internal VA referrals for the consults. They also refuse to refer me to anyone who possibly CAN help-- or the Mission Act options don't have any providers for the care needed within hours of me. Then they refuse to cover many of the meds that outside specialists suggest, costing me >$3,000 per year out-of-pocket. Is this OK at any level and would anyone have any suggestions for how to get the needed care? This way preceeded COVID-19 issues but continues despite it. I've been told the doctors won't even agree to a telehealth or video health consult at the VA across a few departments and programs. I'd already involved a senator's office a few years back and have made almost no progress. Help, please?

It sounds like you need to move it's not the VA it's just your VA location. I suffered for 8 years with a broken jaw then I found out the the VA Mather facility was just horribly ran and nobody cared. When I moved to a town that loves it veterans I started receiving much better care and my emergency room visits are under 2 hours. Change your location I know it sucks to uproot for healthcare but I'd rather be happy and healthy. Look up the VA hospital ratings and decide from there.

My husband served 5 years in the Army. Grant it he was one of the lucky ones to never have to see combat, but the VA has denied our request for benefits because "we make too much money". It downright pisses me off that our country does not care at all about our veterans. Those that are in the system have to fight tooth and nail to get any care. It's honestly ridiculous!

I've been fighting the VA for thirty-five years over hypothalamic damage due to a TBI I got in 1982. I probably have a file a foot thick with the VA and my Congressional office from letters I've written trying to get help. After an initial letter in 1992 where the VA (after denying I had ever been treated for my problems when it was all over my DD214), when I've tried to get the VA to properly address the fact there is no rating and classification for my condition (and I suspect there are literally thousands of vets from the GWOT who have it from IEDs but are undiagnosed) I get the same ol' runaround that they'll keep it in mind if the subject ever comes up.
After 23 years my various secondary conditions caught up with me and I had to retire from my second career of teaching school and I was given 100%, but it's still not addressing the real issue. My concern now is if something happens to me will my wife be taken care of.
I gave up on receiving VA medical treatment something like seven years ago when the Endo Clinic at Birmingham stopped seeing me because the travel pay was too much and they transferred me to the Outpatient Clinic in Dothan, AL - then a few years later closed that clinic. After a year of trying to get an appointment at one of the alternative clinics I said screw it. I have good civilian care and the VA clinic wasn't doing much for me anyway so...

It seems us Females that serve have harder time getting benefits....
I was not rape or sexually harassed but did have medical issue proven & have 1 I can not prove...
I refuse to lie or make up a story for monetary benefits...
Good luck & keep trying...
I would start with your city officials before Washington head honchos...

Ha...as much as the VA toots their hone. They are self centered and petty. I think some of the denials have nothing to do with complexity or money. They have the power to decide who gets what. Moral of the story: don't rub any body the wrong way. I did, went up chain to oig and my senator. Good luck, save your info in detail and you can get comped

Since you are dealing with the VA, you are not on AD. Are you going to or close to a big regional facility? I have had several different types of medical procedures over the years. I am 100%, also retired from the USAF. As a retiree, I am enrolled with Tri-West (Tri Care), and am 65 on Medicare. OK, I'm covered all ways from Sunday. Do you have access to a patient advocate? Why won't "they" outsource you? With the VA everything begins with your primary care provider, then to either a VA specialist provider, or you are outsourced to a civilian specialist. Have you obtained a copy of your medical history, stating that VA care is refused, or denied due to cost? Armed with that you can send a copy to your congressman/woman. Election time, they won't want to lose your vote.
