The Proud Canadian Navy is wearing out. They lost two supply ships recently (one to a fire and the other rusted through) and both had to be retired. Now their last Destroyer is also rusting out. Their Navy Brass says it will take 6 years for a replacement. The Canadians have not asked us for any help but they should. Canada does help NATO with patrols in the Black Sea. They need the ships that we have.

If they want them, they know how to get them from us through the FMS program. As far as giving them one, if they asked, I am sure we would provide.

Do we happen to have two destroyers that are currently just sitting around unmanned and unused? If any are just sitting around in a mothball status I suppose something akin to the old Lend/Lease act could be considered, but I don't think we are that deep into a second Cold War to merit it.

SFC (Join to see) - It is interesting to see a mark- number whatever torpedo just explode under the ship and break its back (keel?) I still think we should not have got rid of them even with that torpedo and tactical nuke tomahawk equivalent that can decimate a carrier battle group.

I would propose a joint naval training exercise, we reallocate a few ships and let their Sailors operate on our ships with us in support of whatever operation their Destroyer would have been doing. Good opportunity for training and state partnership.

I would post a list of all the ships we have in mothball both in Bremerton and Philly but CTOSN beat me too it.

I would say no to the frigates. I would not object however to giving them a few canoes.

Canada have 9 frigates and a few small outdated coastal patrol crafts not much bigger than world War II sub chasers. We need to give them something since we have a whole fleet of ships awaiting a mission. Canada has been criticized for not contributing its 2% to NATO so if we sell them ships they will have to get the money to maintain them.

LTC Stephen Conway - They simply could refuse to accept them, and likely would. It would be like giving tanks to Costa Rica

1stSgt Nelson Kerr - interesting analogy but it's funny that Nicaragua bought a hundred and fifty t-72 tanks from Russia and the Honduran government is not saying much about it and the Costa Rican government complaining about it but Costa Rica has no Army.

LTC Stephen Conway - The biggest army that they could afford to field would be about as much use as a dixie-cup full of water in a forest fire so it makes little difference

I would say this is an opportunity to have a joint ship exercise, Canadian and American Sailors operate on the same ship(s). Conducting whatever mission they would have used of their Destroyer. Could be a valuable learning and training experience.

NG and Canadian Army are already doing joint exercises, might as well throw Navy into the mix.

I would say we let their Sailors onto a few of our ships and do joint exercises until their new ships are ready MSG. Good opportunity for training.

SPC (Join to see) - Excellent Idea. It is sad that their former conservative government did a good job using their Army in Afghanistan but they let their Navy suffer to support it.

Whit their attitude about military spending i under liberal and conservatives governments they would not take them if we gave them unless we offered to pay for the maintenance and crews.

I'm sure your suggestion has been kicked around at length at the five-sided Puzzle Palace. That nothing has come of those discussions only serves to highlight the lack of common sense on the part of the discussion participants!!!

The original post was about if we should sell or give ships to Canada. The verbiage as since changed. My response was to question why the hell we should simply give them a damn ship. It's not our responsibility to maintain their naval strength. If they want a used destroyer, and we have one to sell, then they can buy it.

SGT Dave Tracy - There is no indication at all that they want any ships ,bought or given, from us, nor that they have any need for them.

1stSgt Nelson Kerr - Didn't say they did. The post author gave the suggestion to give or sell them a ship or two.
