Coffee or energy drinks, what is your favorite and why?

The smell of a good cup of coffee is one of the best way to start the day. I would have to be a poet to describe the wonders and beauty of my favorite drink. Nevertheless, younger generations seem to have a strong preference for energy drinks despite the healthy risk involve in their excessive consumption. Is it a generational difference or a marketing issue?

Coffee, no contest. It's cheaper and is a lot healthier, as long as you don't add too much cream or sugar. There is nothing quite look a hot cup of coffee on a cold morning.

It appears to be both a generational difference and a marketing issue. What's not to love about some great java in the morning - or afternoon - or in the TOC in the middle of the night??

Sir,
I think a lot of it comes down to generational differences in the amount of sugar increasing over the decades. The amount of sugar that's present in the average American's diet nowadays is substantially higher than what it was 50, 40, even 30 years ago. I wonder how much of that change comes down to manufacturers realizing that sugar just tastes good.

Drank Coffee for YEARS! Always used cream and sugar. First ship cured me of sugar - things lived in the sugar and the cream was usually curdled. So went to Black coffee. Then discovered how good
TEA tasted! Hot TEA without anything in it. English Breakfast Tea. Hot and Strong. No need for anything else in it. Yes, very hard to get in the Navy unless you have your own stash, but I did for the last few years in my career. I use a Mr. Coffee type machine and use TEA instead. Really good in both HOT and Cold weather.
I have tried the other drinks, but have not found any types I really like. So I still do drink an occasional Coffee, prefer TEA.

Coffee for me please, the only time I ever consumed an energy drink was while deployed to Iraq in '05 when they provided them to us and they were readily available. Never cared for the taste of them I guess, would rather have my cup of joe to wake me up and keep me alert. At home and while I was AD, I drank coffee usually up till noon and then switched to iced tea after that, occasionally I would utilize cold cokes but mostly when out in the field training the LTs, just to torture them!!

Hot black tea (English/Irish Breakfast) with a little touch of skim milk and sugar...no better way to jumpstart the morning or the afternoon :)

Unquestionably coffee. It's derived from what mother nature has already provided without any of the chemicals and other unpronounceable additives found in today's energy drinks. Did I mention it tastes better?

As part of the yournger generation of Soldier, I tend to lean to coffee, simply because it is cheaper in the long run. You buy a maker and the bean (pre ground if you wish). and it last weeks. But with an energy drink you buy one a day or a twelve pack and that is twelve days. Don't get me wrong i do drink energy drinks but that is more of a i am in the mood for it. Over all i would have to say it is more of a convieance factor then anything.

You're spot on about the convenience. Coffee is great if you're sitting around an office all day, but a can of Monster is best otherwise.

Used to throw those Extra strength Monsters back like it was going out of style 1-3 cans a day back when I was a busy guy. I actually preferred coffee when I younger which may or may not have stunted my growth. But now I just use good old fashion will power to get me through the day.

You're in good company! I asked a general officer if he uses caffeine to get him through his 18-HOUR days and he said nope, just will power. I'd try will power but I couldn't find it at the PX so I bought a 4-pack of Monster instead.

I like both. If I'm at home I will usually have a cup of coffee. When I'm at work I'll have an energy drink. I like the energy drink because I can sip on it for most of the day and tastes the same. Sip the same cup of coffee for most of the day and you will want to cut your tongue out.
