So I was perusing Army Times and saw this little Gem:
http://www.armytimes.com/article/20110309/NEWS/103090328/Ex-Walter-Reed-CSM-sentenced-to-6-months
From the article:
Some of the offenses admitted by Crump include wearing six awards and decorations from March to December of 2009, including the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal with Arrowhead device, which indicates — contrary to military records — that he made a combat jump into Grenada. He admitted he wore a U.S. Navy Achievement Medal without authority since 2006 and, on three occasions, two or three unauthorized overseas service bars.
Do you think that the CSM was fined too harshly, just right, or not enough?
I will reserve my comments for now.

I think he got what he deserved. It's one thing when someone who never served goes to the surplus store and gets all PX Rangered up, it is totally different when someone in our ranks does it. He served, he should know what that uniform means and what those awards mean to the people that really earned them.

I feel the sentence was appropriate. Unless I'm mistaken, with the reduction to SSG, he automatically surppasses the retention point for SSGs and will begin automatic retirrement processing; part of the current drawdown.
The automatic beginning of out processing would have began regardless of any rank he was reduced too. As a CSM his time in service had already exceeded the retention point for all ranks below E9.

SGM, 1SG....I think the 3 of us share the same sentiment here...and on most things. I think this was a fluke misunderstanding. I know how the SGM thinks having served in combat with him and Im pretty sure I know how the 1SG feels also having talked with him a lot.
Id introduce the 2 of you if I could...but believe we are all on the same page.

SFC William Laws I don't believe so, but honestly I do not, but since you've asked I will find out Wednesday when I go back to work. I'll call a friend over in Finance and ask her the deal! I've been out for so long, I'm not sure of what the rules and regs are on that. Only makes since, the answer is NO! Will find out!

The SSG (formerly BDE CSM) has nothing on LTC Green. It's been a year and the rumor around Missouri is that LTC Green turned in his OCIE at his old unit and retired. Based on SSG Crump's fate the LTC got off light...anyone hear any different on Green?

I, like most of the others think jail time was too much. He should have been demoted and fined. It really saddens me that someone would let some fake medals and ribbons wreck their entire career and retirement. I just don't understand.

He should lose his retirement as well. Meaning his career was fraud. Senior enlisted get away with too much. Petraeus was another. Set the example. If you cannot, let someone who can step up. Many others get passed on promotions because of these scumbags. It doesn't affect them alone. It affects they entire military.

SPC Derrick Backstrom I understand your sentiments as all military members are first held to a higher standard then the rest of society. Not just Senior Enlisted United States Army Soldier's, but everyone who has any sort of pride in who they are should strive to aleays take the hard right over the easy wrong. However, one should never make hollow generalizations based off another's behavior or poorly made decisions.
This now retired Staff Sergeant treated me poorly and sat on Senior Enlisted Centralized Promotion Board's. He decided the fate of any Soldier's careers while the Army made it's decision in how his case was adjudicated.
While I value other's including your opinion I have learned throughout the year's that some thing's are simply best left alone in that my time is valuable to me. I had a SGM who sat on my MSG promotion board in 2007 tell me in front of my COL that he made sure I did not get selected because he didn't like me. Another CSM swore I would never make it beyond SFC. A lady who was the Chief of my S-1 in Alaska erroneously FLAGGED me right before my 2008 loom for MSG and lifted it after the board adjourned. On one MSG promotion board I was called and congratulated on supposedly having been selected for MSG whereby I never was promoted.
This is all well and good in that I did what I could. Our rank does not define us and karma has a way of working it's self out. By the grace of God I have more then I could have ever asked for. This man was tried, convicted and retired as a SSG where life is not fair and we can only really control what is in our own backyard.
Always looks forward SPC Backstrom and never allow emotion control the decisions you make!
Be good brother...

You have to make and set examples. I have no issue with this punishment.

No Integrity. At that level you should lose rank and give classes to multiple divisions so they realize this is what happens. He is a jackass just like the stolen Valor idiots. Make an example.

I had a SSG get relieved over some E'er whining. They are working too many hours. WTF happened to being a soldier 24 hrs a day? Army is going to crap, and I am able to watch as a civilian. Terrible thing to see.

I think the punishment is too harsh. Period. Their is always some ass-hat that thinks we should publicly humiliate the individual or throw their gear to the ground while spitting disgust there way all the while knowing the one heaving the most disdain has a closet full of bones of there own. Yes he should have been punished, but damn SSG and doing time? Petreaus paid a fine and is walking around and he gave some bimbo classified information. This guy, suffering from low self esteem I suppose, went to clothing sales, bought some badges he wasn't authorized, and had a brain fart wearing them. He did not sleep with a subordinate, give up state secrets, walk out of his FOB, kill or maim someone and most folks who took the survey think he did not get enough. Dang!
