http://www.cnn.com/2015/01/29/politics/bergdahl-swap-prisoner-militant-activity/index.html

Saw this this morning on CNN, but looks like one of the prisoner swaps may have returned to his old ways.

Although I am glad that a fellow service member was returned back to the US (despite how he ended up a POW), I don't think the exchange was necessarily equal. Five Taliban leaders for a SPC (was his rank at the time he was capture, I believe). I would be hard pressed to say Five Tailban leaders are worth a General Officer or a Sergeant Major, let a lone a SPC.

And with the pending results of the investigation about to come out, I wonder how this could / will affect it?

Thoughts?

The five were top Taliban leaders, specifically a Deputy Defense Minister, Deputy Intel Minister, two former governors and a Provincial Security Chief. Despite their leadership of a genocidal terror group which may re-take Afghanistan once U.S. troops are withdrawn, they were traded this past summer for a low ranking SM. That's not foreign policy that's just plain bat shit crazy. The only thing I see is POTUS wants GITMO closed and saw this as an opportunity to dump five that could be a little difficult justifying their release especially when 2 of them are telling you they will reengage once released.

SPC Scott Mayhew If I am not mistaken, I think he was promoted while he was captive. At the time, there was no investigation and usually the military trys to keep you on track while you are a POW. However, if the investigation goes to CM, then that could be changed in the end.

Yes I think there where 2 separate investigations. The first one was conducted right after he went missing. Then just recently a more exhausting report of some 2000 pages. Its been in the hands of Four-star general Mark Milley for about a month. I think the issue is the intent in Bergdahl leaving his post. 6 guys lost their lives looking for him. I hope that is on every page of the report.

The guy left a note, sent emails, radio transmissions, etc... To me that fills in the intent part. I don't buy any of this. Something stinks about the whole swap.

Not sure about the ambassador position but I do see adjudication being withheld being he was classified as a POW.

MAJ Brian Oberg, How soon will the U.S. activate the microchips we surely implanted in those 5 detainees before release? We do have Drones programmable to target microchips?

Or heck, even an implanted bug...the intelligence coup could be worth the hassle of fighting them again.

Is there anyone on this site who seriously thought that releasing those prisoners would end well? If we could see this coming, why didn't the media or, especially, the administration?

When one (or more) of these a*%holes kills 10, 20 50 people in an attack they planned and/or participated in will it have been worth it? We got one deserter, one life for 5 killers. I will call him a traitor and I don't need to wait for a trial to have an opinion. I will not be on the jury. I've seen the testimony of his platoon mates. I trust them, I do not trust the Army, under this administration, to press this as it should be.

This was ill conceved but with an alternative purpose. The purpose, in my opinion, was for Obama to prove he could release 5 of the worst and if nothing happened he could push his case to close Gitmo. It was a gamble for sure but a gamble with other peoples lives.

Their ideological views prevent them from believing in peaceful coexistence. They have been and will always be lead by terrorists who teach hate. Releasing them was, without a doubt, providing Aid and Comfort to the enemy. Anyone who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves.

"The Muslim Brotherhood called for “a long, uncompromising jihad” in Egypt just days after a delegation of the Islamist group’s key leaders and allies met with the State Department..."

Did you expect them to actually behave and live up to their "end" of the bargain. The administration got played like a fine piano. Personally we should have had a welcoming party waiting for them when they arrived back in the Middle East.
