Like many of his generation (most) Yogi Berra answered his nation's call to support allied efforts in WWII.
The article was an interesting read and something I never thought about with respect to the baseball legend.

That's Chief Yogi to you!
As 19-year-old Second Class Seaman Lawrence P. Berra, he played a significant part in one of the war’s most important campaigns, the Normandy Invasion (better known as D-Day). Yogi was one of a six-man crew on a Navy rocket boat, firing machine guns and launching rockets at the German defenses at Omaha Beach. He was fired upon, but was not hit, and later received several commendations for his bravery.

That's a picture of another Hall of Famer, Bob Feller... not Yogi. Both were in the Navy.

He like many of his generation served. Today you would find few celebrities or athletes serving something greater than themselves

Yes, I knew that and that he was on a landing craft carrying troops to the beach on D-Day.

Always go to other people’s funerals, otherwise they won’t come to yours. Yogi doesn't have to worry New York will give Yogi a great send off

Yes he was at Normandy in WWII ... lot of guys go, ‘Hey, Yog, say a Yogi-ism.’ I tell ’em, ‘I don’t know any.’ They want me to make one up. I don’t make ’em up. I don’t even know when I say it. They’re the truth. And it is the truth. I don’t know
