Aviator Eugene Burton Ely performs the first take off from a ship in Hampton Roads, Virginia. He took off from a makeshift deck on the USS Birmingham in a Curtiss pusher.

Especially challenging since they built their flight deck that week -- out of wood planks. I think the pilot actually worked for the aircraft manufacturer. Thanks for posting!
