Do I️ need a passport to go through the Canadian border if I’m on orders to Alaska?

No. All you need is your orders, military ID, and driver's license. I just moved from Alaska. I did not need a passport.

No, but its a great secondary form of ID, and it is nice to have in case you do get a short or no notice opportunity to travel.

Its says essentially the same thing on US customs page, US Army Travel page and Canadian Customs

I agree. Leave form, Orders, and Military ID is enough (for just himself that is).

Or the passport card. It's actually because the US will require you to have it when you re-enter. Used to be your license was enough. But, did you know that there's ferry service between Seattle and AK? That might be fun to look into. CPL (Join to see)

If you are driving you can have an enhanced drivers license but if you fly into and country you need a passport. Same with Mexico as well.

SPC David Willis - Not to go way off topic but we have bears in New England and I'm not conerned with them at all. I'm much more afraid of bumping into a moose than a bear. I've seen both and when I see a bear its "Oh cool! A bear!" but when it's a moose it's "Oh sh!t, that's a moose!"

No you don’t. If you are on orders that’s all they need to see. I drove from AK to NY and that’s all they required for me and my wife.

When I drove to FT Richardson back in '95 we only had to show military orders. But, you know, that was 23 years ago. When my wife and I went to Haliburton this past summer we needed passports but getting the visa stamp was optional. If you have time to get a passport I would recommend getting it.

I'm assuming you're driving which would normally mean "yes." I'd be curious is there is any special DoD or State Dept. document you can get for these circumstances though.

CAD customs is less helpful.. and my response was to just Active duty mil members, I just cant tell for sure if it applies to Dependant ID card holders.
Id ask post transportation folks as they are the SME's, Id ask US Customs and since I believe in trust but verify, what I'm told by those two agencies, I would send to Canadian Customs in writing and ask them to concur or deny.
Little bit of phone tag and email use now from the comfort of your home or office might save a whole lot of frustration later at the CAD border staring at the irritated face of a CAD border guard...
And dont forget, there are rules for property importing, firearms, pets, ect.
I spent 9 hours justifying and being searched when my son and i trailer my off road truck from AK through CAD to a get together in CO. Border and customs were not avid off roaders, and to them it looked like a beat up "work" truck...why would you trailer that thing, and not just rent a car in the US?
