CPT (Join to see) - Yes, generally only 'mustangs' can fully comprehend both sides of the fence that separates the E's and O's, a 'no man's land' even a Navy CNO could not survive: http://articles.baltimoresun.com/1996-05-19/news/ [login to see] _1_admiral-boorda-mike-boorda-admiral-mike.
Death of an admiral Mike Boorda: CNO's suicide illuminates personal and service's troubles.
WHAT REALLY caused Adm. Jeremy "Mike" Boorda, the Chief of Naval Operations, to commit suicide? Could it really have been because he had worn two little brass "V" buttons without having won them by...

I have been conversing with a retired officer now pulling a double in the civilian side of the NAVY. And get this, he was in policy creation of part of the program I served under. And he now says some 20 years later, that the 1990's especially in the NAVY from the policy side as a knee jerk and basically terrible in a few short words. That is great. I served staring 1994 in programs that were all knee jerk reactions in the downsiziing era of the 1990s, and the TOTAL FORCE POLICY CHANGES, getting more for less. No wonder I have an anxiety disorder.

First off good to see you back on the boards.
To answer your question I think it really depends on their commissioning source and whether or not they are prior enlisted. Prior enlisted and Officers who commissioned through OCS seemed to have the biggest understanding of enlisted, at least in my experience.

Thanks there PO1. I took some time off getting a lot of therapy as much as possible at the VA. As far as this question is concerned, it is a follow up to an Officer who went through the OSAM program as opposed the SAM program I enlisted in. He went straight into Officer Weekend Warrior status after College. But OSAM was not an ROTC program. I do not know all the commands he served. I do know he was a CO and XO at different points. But Officers in the NAVY that came in like him would never understand the ANNAPOLIS route, or ROTC route, and or Bootcamp for sure. I am not downing anyone. I am learning through him, there are basically many different Manning Policy Programs to get service members in the door. Some enlsited do not even need to go to bootcamp anymore. To me it just seems like a confusing mess sometimes, when the uniforms of 2 dfferent service members with different entrance programs and completely different experience and quals,, are exactly the same. I have a suggestion to put a certain designation on a uniform for the entrance program they went in with. I went to regular Navy Greatlakes Boot at 18 and then into direct weekend warrior status attached to a small SMALL SELRES AUGMENT crew for an FFG in the 1990s. The program was basically a short lived bust that was disaterous on the Deck Plate. You just can not support a full time active duty FFG with only 10% the duty time. Otherwise I was going to College Full Time, in between weekend warrior status, to become an officer. It was sold to me as some kind of possible ROTC self managed program. Needless to say both the enlistments and programs are gone.

I am familiar with your history from our previous talks, and I'm glad to hear that the Navy decided to end that experiment (though it sucks for men like you who were their guinea pigs). I'm also glad to hear you're getting counseling and seem to be doing better. Keep up the good fight brother!

OCS is no longer easier that BCT. I can guarantee you that... Officers that go through West Point or ROTC do not go through the same BCT as enlisted, but have their own versions. OCS consists of prior service and college option. Prices obviously went to BCT and served enlisted before going to OCS. College op go to BCT then straight to OCS. So some of the Army's officers have been to BCT.

Not all. Some forget where they came from and are cocky. Others think they are still enlisted and mess in the NCO lane.

LTC (Join to see) - I agree! I've seen some terrible officers that were prior E and tried to micromanage all the NCOs...it got old quick and I had to give a Maj the "With all due respect sir" speech as an E-5. Good thing that won't get you shot in the AF!

"That's why mustangs are the best officers"...I totally agree & we had several WOs & CWOs who were just outstanding officers at the Boston Navy Yard in Charlestown MA.. But they all had a lot of years of service which may account for why they were so well liked and respected by all of us enlisted & other officers
