The whole hubbub is political.

It's political from the White House because the President is taking the opportunity to rename/restore the mountain for easy popular approval, especially with the locals whom he's visiting. *

It's political for the opponents of it because... well, you need to oppose things and this can be played for the hard core opposition who follows such things. **

It's political way-back-when because instead of the local name, it was named in honor of a President who... never went and presumably could have cared less.

Much of being President is about politics. It's not merely being C-in-C, or governing, but it's about standing up, making speeches, and drawing attention to X or less attention to Y. Whether you're a Democrat, Republican, Saint President Bush, Satan Worshipper President Bush, or similiar name associations with our current leader. It's what you DO. You build political capital this way.

* The President doesn't name places. That's the Secretary of the Interior. However, the SecInt is not the most highly visible position in the government (can you name the current one?). With the President making a rare trip to Alaska, and the huge microphone that comes with the Presidential Seal on a podium, it makes sense for President Obama to announce it. Further, much like a commander is in charge of or responsible for all that happens under the executive branch.

** Is this deserving an oppositional full-court press? No, and it's not getting that. However, in all political sides, there are those who listen occasionally and those who are hard-core devotees. The opposition here is for the latter... "See? We're opposed to yet another example of ...."

Please explain why he had to fly there to rename it? He's so worried about the environment that he must expand his carbon footprint to do so? SSG Alleria Stanley

He's not flying there to rename it. He's renaming it in conjunction with a visit to that state.

As to why fly there? Same as we like it when our 1SG/CO, BN CO, SMA, etc get out and have "face time" with the troops. He's the President of the United States, and as such it's perfectly reasonable to expect him to visit a state. Some states will naturally be seen more than others.

Air Force One, as along with Secret Service Protection, and the White House living quarters, etc, are part of the Office that we the citizens provide our leader as part of the job. Again, regardless of party affiliation.

America's greatness lies within her heritage and I believe the current administration is ruining what our country was built on, our reputation and it is trying to divide us rather than Unite The States of America. Leave MT McKinley alone!!!

I know it was not a executive order from Obama. But I heard John Kasich say that they have been Trying to do this for decades. So the question is why now. So an Obama over reach.

Is this really helping our nation. What if a group of people say changing the past is really not helping the present? What then? More violence?

No, I don't but he can do so even if unpopular. Since he's at it, he should also rename the USS Arizona, and name it USS Obama, as it is going down in history and taking many bodies with them. Kind of fitting if you ask me.

I just wonder why all of a sudden decide to change the name of a mountain? Yes I know it was changed from the original Denali to McKinley for whatever reasons they had back when they did it.
I think for years to come many people will still call it Mt. McKinley. In the end I think its just another useless move of putting a check mark in the books as something accomplished.

Seems like a waste of time to rename something back to its original name from a name that was never "officially" approved to begin with... Our government... Gotta love it...
