Do you have a post-military deam business planned?

If I had my way I would have a slice of land and set up an outdoor rifle/pistol range. I have ZERO business skills so that isn't a reality for me, but it sure would be FUN! If you had a military ID I'd let you help police the range in lieu of membership fees! I'd have the reloaders on station doing their thing. I'd even have a coffee shop so I could have all my vices covered and co-located. Do you have a dream business? Are you already living your dream? You may already have the next great idea!

Now that smoking weed is legal in Colorado, I was thinking that when I retire, I might open the worlds biggest Dorito store-right next to a weed store. I will have guys walking around with warm Doritos in every flavor, with fans blowing the scent of warm Doritos onto the street. Figure that in a year, could triple my retirement!
Good store placement would make for a sure thing. They toke up and then chow down.
And I would talk really really really slow, and deep-to freak people out.

This reminded me of the news story I read where a Girl Scout was ordered to move her table because she set up shop right next to a weed shop. They moved the table but not before she had tripled her sales from the previous week already!

"We're gonna sit here and watch you smoke the whole bag." They gave that movie 1.5 stars! What do they know!

That was possibly the funniest movie ever. Right up there with Caddyshack and Animal House, just for Cops!

Dream job would be to run a Charter Sailboat business either in the Caribbean or South Pacific. All the rum and sun you can handle.

SFC Mark Merino I hold Gilligan entirely responsible for the fiasco, which was the 3 hour tour of the SS Minnow. Therefore Gilligan is not allowed on my charters.... Captain Ron on the other hand.. now that is a different story...

Cpl (Join to see) Gilligan wrecked the Minnow on a deserted island with 2 gorgeous women. I think he gave the professor a run for the money in the "brains" department.

I always wanted to open a bar that served drinks with only two ingredients (and ice could be considered an ingredient). So if you wanted straight liquor or a martini, ok. If you wanted a Long Island Slow Comfortable Screw Iced Tea, I can point you down the street. And it would have a cigar bar/humidor in the back.
Yes, I know it’s very niche.
No, I have no plans to really do it.

Thanks, SSgt Lamb -- I greatly appreciate such considerate details as well as the medicinal properties of a good single malt, of course, taken in moderation. - Cheers!

PV2 (Join to see) Actually MM is designed by the distillers to be cut with just a splash of water. Try it, you will see what I mean.

I'm actually in the process of possibly making it happen. OK, at least I'm taking the SBA course to learn how to get started. But, essentially, I've been doing wood burning since HS. I make plaques, boxes, etc. I've made several for PCS and retirement gifts. Each one is completely custom made. I will also make wildlife plaques. And that's all I have to say about that. :-)

SFC Mark Merino, This is awesome and definitely a keeper! You obviously had some very imaginative individuals in your unit. Thanks for the compliment. I really appreciate it.

Sure do. Go and build a system that crashes every other day, only works 15% of the time and does not communicate with the systems and sell it to the government. While it may sound like a failure it would be more functional than most of the systems out there right now.

@2LT Katherine Carlino Does this make LTC (Join to see) the Don? If so, what kinda business are we running? I know I'm the money guy (and the guy who gets whacked while enjoying a stromboli (or in our case a terrorist sandwhich!). The question then becomes.....who is the rat? I have a suspicion already! lol

Hobby store or Vintage Video Game shop. I'm already going to school for business to try and make this a reality....

I found a hobby store about an hour from here that has all the nerdy sci-fi stuff I love. Original Battlestar Galactica models, Star Blazers series I-III. I fear going back there with money.

Hell yeah! i love modeling and painting, my sole issue with a hobby store as a first business is the fact they are very hard to profit from... however, everywhere I go TDY I actually make a point to visit hobby stores and see what works, what doesn't work, and how other owners operate around the country. Oddly enough, the BEST store I ever visited was in Fairbanks, Alaska. But hopefully here in 12+ years when I retire I'll have a more solid plan.

Where in Fairbanks? I was there in 2012 and never found anything like that. Bummed me out.

Mark, if you don't have business skills, have you considered learning them? There are several courses we offer through Syracuse University and through the SBA on starting and building your business. All of them are free to veterans, transitioning military members, and in some cases family members. (There's a $75 registration fee for one of them, VWISE, but it covers two nights in a hotel that are usually over $150 per night, and that's just so people don't cancel and leave us paying for an empty room.) No GI Bill use, no tuition, no fees, nothing hidden, and a huge network of alumni.
Specifically we have:
Veterans with disabilities (Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities, EBV)
Caregivers and family members (Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans’ Families, EBV-F)
Veteran women, active duty and female family members (Veteran Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship, V-WISE)
Post 9/11 veterans and military spouses (Veteran Career Transition Program, VCTP)
Transitioning service members (Operation Boots to Business: From Service to Startup, B2B)

This is the first time I recall hearing of this as well, thank you for posting it. I will be checking out more closely in the near future. I have already favorited the site.

I am living the dream. My husband worked in the Pest Control Industry for almost 10 years by the time I separated from the service. I hated hearing the tricks of the trade and hope some business operated using "Overhead" as an excuse for the cost of some of the service tickets written. After some time away from the service and a lot of discussion, we opened up our own Pest Control Company that challenges every business model out there when it comes to the industry. I get to help out my community to even include the people that work in my very field. Crazy eh?

Depending on places people have served unfortunatly can cement certain fears about thing like spiders and snakes etc. The plus side is that when you separate from the service if you have any experience with insects and animals pest control is a great business to get into. There are wonderful resources and people available nationally to help guide people in the right direction to get started. Ideally getting certified and shown the ropes is the best way to start out before opening your own business. That is with any trade. Pest control is a learned trade. Don't ever let someone tell you that you are not able to do any job. Every service member I have ever known is head and shoulders above the majority of competition for trade jobs or any job. Especially for my female comrades and sailors out there. If anyone is interested in some resources to get GOOD information feel free to email me.

I'd like to make a living by creating. Writing, music, video, knives, whatever.

Right brain kind of guy huh SSgt Michael Hacker ? I don't have an artistic bone in my body. My daughter can look at an instrument and master it. Must skip a generation.

Not sure. I play guitar, write, etc., but I also have a tech and applied linguistics background. I like to think I use both sides. (Not much of both sides, but still both sides.)

I knit and sew and would love to have a shop where people could learn these crafts as well as purchase items. Knitting calmed and relaxed me when I was stressed with my ex's deployments.

Lisa, have you considered selling things online on eBay, etsy, etc? Or creating your own website?

I think we have the same Sand Man, cause that sounds like you pulled it directly from my brain. Only difference is i would want an indoor option and a firearms shop attached.
