One of the great Army traditions is passing on stories of the "Old Army." In this vain, early this year I was contacted by fellow military historian and blogger Don Caughey, with whom I share an interest in the horse cavalry in general, and in the Sixth U.S. Cavalry in particular. Co-author of The 6th United States Cavalry in the Civil War and blog writer of Regular Cavalry in the Civil War, Don has been a continual go-to reference for primary source information on the frontier army’s mounted arm; he and I have swapped information on various cavalry officers and anecdotes for almost a decade. So it was not unusual that Don reached out to me with a book that he knew would peak my interest.

I was once told a story about the origins of todays dress blue uniform. During the Indian wars Cav soldiers were issued a blue uniform. They would wrap the heavy blue blouse in the blanket so that it would be somewhat clean if they came into a town. As a result the pants became sun bleached while the blouse remained a darker blue. I have no idea if this is a fact but it sounds plausible.

COL Sam Russell I just ordered 'Old Army Sketches'. My book source, abebooks.com had it for $40.57, w/no shipping cost. 'The Book Repository' in London, UK scans books printed before 1923 and prints to order from that perhaps imperfect scan.?

MAJ Hugh Blanchard My granddaddy was on the border early on. Grandmother had an Armadillo shell magazine basket. My father, at times claimed he was speaking Spanish to me. GF later did time in Russia w/ the 31st Inf's Polar Bears!

MAJ Hugh Blanchard Sorry, Major, I am aging. GF was in the 31st Polar Bears not the 32nd, who were the Buccaneers. I should know better; @ Camp Casey in 1954/55 the 31st was across the road from the 7th Signal Co! The 7th ID's, 17th Infantry Buffaloes were 10-15 Klics North, North East of Casey at the time. 17th Recon Plt spent a lot of time just off the ridgelines in the area and surreptitiously kept track of our Signal Co wire teams. The PSGs were acquainted, no harm nor reporting was done!

The PSGs were friends, no harm nor reporting of our activities was done.
