For those of us who grew up or had come of age during the Vietnam Era the music was mind blowing/boggling depending which side of the fence you were on. My question is this: Is the music of the Vietnam Era coming back into relevance in today's America?

Why or Why Not?

There is music like CCR, Dylan and Buffalo Springfield, the great Jimi Hendrix, Joan Baez and The Rolling Stones. A lot of tearful and contradictory emotions associated with the events of the day. Kent St, JFK, RFK, MLK, the list goes on and on and on.

Good to know, SSgt (Join to see), that though we may disagree on other issues, we certainly have similar taste in music.

CPT (Join to see) Indeed my friend. Nothing personal and I like and respect officers. I dealt with pilots almost all day and I had their backs....

I've always found it relevant, and most of it good (in fact preferable to modern Pop, to me at least).

I can also add the the young Cadets I work with enjoy when I pop on the Forrest Gump Soundtrack. Further, we do a whole lesson about Protest in my Ethics Course, and I play many songs from the 60s. The Cadets seem to "dig" it :)

I ‘m happy to know you are teaching real history and not trying to erase it! You don’t hear this in schools today and I am always sharing history with my granddaughter. I lived through a lot of it and became a small tiny piece of it!

Do you think music from the Vietnam Era is coming back into relevance in today's America?

I answered maybe because there are a couple of music groups out there who are trying to bring relevance.

Unfortunately I believe there is too much violence in today's music. Very rebellious.

Just my take. :)

Never had the chance to see Merle but seen Don Williams, Mickey Gilley and Charlie Pride. And just this last March seen George Strait for his Cowboy Rides Away tour. One of the best I have seen that was a jokester was Neil McCoy. That guy can be pretty comical.

Ok, let me come to my own defense. What I meant was not that the music from 1963 to 1973 was ever irrelevant, rather that as the war continues in Afghanistan, groups such as Avenged Sevenfold, Nickleback and a few others have begun repeating the sentiments of my childhood. Has the music world come full circle? And, has using social media such as youtube, Facebook, and even RallyPoint have been used to forward the ideas of the past back into the thought processes of today's youth specifically and the populace in general. It seems to me that the music from Vietnam could easily be translated to Afghanistan and Iraq.

To make my case I offer up the following references:

SPC Charles Brown, your question implies that Vietnam era music was ever not relevant. WTF are you talking about??? :-)

To wit, the Forrest Gump soundtrack ... one of the best collections of music ever!

Did the music ever lose its relevance? I think it kept its relevance in relation to its own time and place.
