Do you tip in restaurant and food delivery people at the same rate?

Got into an interesting discussion with house guests on tipping yesterday. We were out all day and, although we had a planned meal, no one felt like cooking so we ordered in. They insisted on paying and as we were discussing the order asked what percentage we tip food delivery down here. They're from New England and apparently up there its common not tip as much for food delivery as you would if eating in at the same restaurant. Wife an I had never heard of that, but then we live in Florida which is hardly a hot spot for current dining etiquette. So, that got me wondering, should you tip more for in restaurant service and less if it's delivery from the same restaurant?

I don't do the delivery food bit but I've been know to tip up to 50% for really exceptional service. These places that charge a minimum 18% on the check are simply cheating their people out of money. I can't remember when I left a tip less than 20%-30%.

I'm from New England and No we don't tip at the same level for delivery as on site table service. On table service they see after other details which takes time to provide service vs delivery which consist of dropping off Your order which may only take a minute or two once they arrive.

I don't think it has to due with the area you live in. When I visited friends this past summer who are originally from Florida and living in different areas from their births, (Gainesville, Orlando, and Daytona) thiey tipped as I do. I live in NJ and I MIGHT tip a delivery person. Reaon is they're most
likely paid much better than a waiter/waitress. They are getting paid to deliver. So, tipping will depend on what and how much I have ordered. In restaurants you're tipping for a service that isn't just bringing you your order as a delivery driver. They greet you and then get your drink order. Then they take your order, and deliver it. Then they come back to check if everything is as you hoped. They refill your drinks. When done and there were no issues, they take your payment and return with your change/receipts. So you can see why many people tip the delivery person less.
Now food for thought: Do you tip drivers from UPS & FedEx? There bringing you your order just like Ubereats and so on.

OH I Noticed From Your Comment, You Live In Australia.
Have To Ever Taken A Good Look At A Globe Of The World
And Noticed Australia's On The Bottom? Therefore Have You Ever Wondered
"Why Doesn't Australia Fall Off The Earth & Float Into Outer Space"? It IS A Conundrum,

Good response. No we don't tip UPS & FedEx, etc but that's a different situation, we rarely have direct contact with them, while you pretty much always have contact with food delivery people.

I hear you. As a retiree, I have the same interaction/contact with most deliverers. Here in my area of NJ most food service and restaurants require payment when placing the order, so most food deliverers just leave the order at the door and bolt.

What Some People Are Unaware Of Is The Amount Of Pressure Placed On The Delivery Persons By Management. They Know The Exact Number Of Packages To Be Delivered & The Number Of Stops Necessary To Complete The Day.. If They Fall Under The Necessary Time Limits, Their Loss Of Employment Is A Possibility. If tips become tax-free does that mean we (people paying tips) can write off tips at the end of the year? Asking for a friend.

YOU'D Think So, Huh?
But The Answer Is "NO".
And When Taking A Client Out For A Meal,
ONLY His Meal Can Be Written Off, As Your's Is Not Considered To Be
A Tax Deductible Expense, Because The Theory Is: "You'd Have Eaten Anyway".

Depends on the delivery charge. When I first had food delivered home years ago there was no delivery charge and I tipped the drivers well. Now that many have delivery charges, that tip has gotten smaller and to the point I dont order food to my house much anymore. $30 for one pizza is crazy when the actual pizza is less than $20.

I usually tip delivery folks a bit more than servers because they're using their own gas and time, especially if it's raining or late at night. Sometimes I use bucket deals like https://www.novotel-singapore-stevens.com/offers/pints-and-perks/ to save on food orders, so I pass on a bit of that savings in the tip—feels fair to do since I'm already paying less than usual.

I've Done THIS Just To See The Look On The Face Of The Person I Hand A Generous Tip To. ~ At The KFC Drive-Threw Window. As I'm Being Handed My Food, I'm Passing Them A $5.00 Bill. Although It May Sound Like A Lot, ~That's The Exact Purpose ~ It's Probably Never Happened To Them Before And It Gives Them A Story To Tell And A Memory To Last A Lifetime. And I Of Course Have Fun Doing It.
