A reserve 1SG being mobilized for a joint command on TCS orders, but will stay in same position on UMR does she stay a 1SG or? Their orders will attach, not assign them. They still have responsibilities to the unit they belong to.

If you are appointed as a 1SG and PCS/TCS and you know that you are going to assume duties as a 1SG at your next assignment you can keep the diamond. The proper thing to do is have your new commander sign a new 4187 appointing you as a 1SG in that unit.

If you will not be assuming duties as a 1SG in your next assignment you should be wearing MSG stripes.

In this case is if she will not be serving as a 1SG in the unit she is TCSd/attached to she should be wearing MSG stripes. She can be re-appointed when she returns to her organic unit.

SGM,

It really depends on how the orders are cut and in what fashion, as well as how the originating opord read. In the reserves, it is very common to have 1SGs, SGMs and CSM assigned or attached to other units on TDY and TCS. While the regulations state the parameters for a 1SG appointment is to include being in the position of command element it does not require the individual remove himself from that position during temporary assignments. I have yet to see in 14 years, any Senior NCO removed from his or her primary UMR during the period of temporary assignment/ attachment to another unit. Most of time, unless specifically ordered, the slot the individual is filling is a slot that they currently hold or can be promoted into. That being said, if they are indeed being placed on the UMR as an MOSQ slot holder then they get the diamond removed. On all other occasions the diamond does not come down. Plain simple end rule is that if they remain on their home station UMR they keep the diamond.

SGT Joseph Goldman That may be true, I am not a Army Reserve regulation guru but I will tell you this, if I was a CSM and had an E-8 attached to my unit performing any duty other than 1SG they would not be wearing a diamond.

Being 1SG is an MOS that is awarded with an Appointment Order. The position required a memo with the line and paragraph number putting you into that position on the UMR . If you are deployed into that position see to it that you have this done . I guess it’s possible to be deployed and not have that line in the deployed unit type the Appointment order yourself and get your command BN or CO to sign it

1SG John Highfill - That means you have the SQI indicating you're currently in the position of 1SG or have held it in the past, to include having been through a First Sergeant's Course. It's not an MOS. 1SG is not an MOS, it's a rank and position.

Then they maintain their diamond. If one does not loose their UMR Line and par position they maintain that rank/grade. It is an attachment not assignment.
