The only award I want is my retirement award which is 16 months and counting that I've been waiting.....Such gratitude on the part of the Reserve System.

I qualify to get it but not going through the trouble to make it official. Didn't join for the ribbons, was just a perk of the job I guess.

So, if you qualify, you don't automatically get it ?

SGT (Join to see) has to be added to our DD214 / record jackets. If he got out prior to award, he'd have to contact board of corrections, and get it added. It's not a difficult process, just "administrative" which means more trouble than it's worth in most cases.

For the most part, it's like the national defense medal. It's an automatic award... but there's a "gap" of folks who were in late 2001-2004 who never got it "officially"

I got out before the service medal was awarded. I qualify for it, but was never issued. Since they added service stars, and multiple campaigns, it's gotten even more confusing for me and I don't even try to keep track now.

SGT Aaron Kennedy, sometimes I think the DOD makes them as they go along. It's like the Internal Revenue, I don't understand anything with the changes in their forms. I think CPA's write the forms so we will have to use them.

SGT (Join to see) Honestly, it causes me no end of confusion. Stupid things like the Southwest Asia Service Medal.... arg.... I have the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for serving there for Southern Watch (which is not a qualifying operation for SWA service), and for another operation which was part of it, but outside the date range...

I gave up a long time ago trying to figure out the rules and regs. Military intelligence. What an oxymoron. (-;
