I went through OSUT about 10 years ago and have always wondered if the things my drill yelled at us were made up on the spot of kind of passed down like a good oral history.

Have things changed in terms of what you can yell at or call IET soldiers? Have you ever said something and thought "hmm shouldn't have said that..."

Everyone else, what's the craziest thing a DS has called you or said to you.

I served with a few guys who spent some time on the trail and he used to tell me that he and the other drills used to sit around and brainstorm outlandish stuff to say and see if they could find a way to use it during the day. I guess it was some kind of a game between the group of them.

Southerners, especially drill sergeants, have a unique sense of metaphor. I once heard a shop foreman in a factory tell a guy he could f*** up a bowling ball with a rubber mallet! I about died laughing!

I attended a Commander/1SG course with a 1SG that was a Drill Sergeant. I asked him this very question. His answer was a mixture of both.

SPC David Willis - Once in Basic, we were on the firing line and we were given those plastic brass deflectors. I had never seen them nor used them before. I was having issues placing that thing on my rifle. I asked the Drill Sergeant next to me for assistance. He looked at me and said "Private, have you ever f*cked a virgin?" I responded with "Yes, Sergeant." His response..."Well, it's like that, Private. You have to make it fit somehow."

SPC David Willis - The very first Drill Sergeant I experienced at Basic Training from my company (who ended up being one of my platoon Drill Sergeants), SSG Lopez, had walked onto the cattle truck I was on. There was about 10 of us on it. All scared shitless. He strolls on, walks to the middle of the truck, then says "All right, Privates. Put your faces in your bags. No talking and no farting, because I don't wanna smell your shit." I thought I was going to my death.

MSG (Join to see) - Ha that's great. I got off the bus from reception and had thought man basic isn't as bad as I thought. I was the first one off the bus and when I got off a drill sergeant walked up to me and said "Hey private nice to meet you" extending his hand for a hand shake. Hahaha I cant believe how dumb I was, I put my bag down and shook his hand and said "nice to meet you drill sergeant" Im pretty sure this was the cue for the shark attack or ambush to start because immediately all I heard was yelling and it didn't stop for what felt like hours haha.
