WHO IS THE BEST LEADER, MANAGER, OR COMMANDER YOU EVER WORKED FOR?

Mine was my Mentor/Commander (RET) Colonel John P. Edwards. He was my Commander at the 357th Aviation Detachment, SHAPE, Belgium and inspired me to become an officer and finish college, and reach for the STARS.

Who was the BEST ever for you?

Several- BG Bobby Porter when he was our BN Cdr (LTC), COL Paul Tiberi (BN Cdr/BDE Cdr), COL Gerald Harkins (BDE Cdr). Great men, who taught me some much.

General Regis Urschler... the only general officer I knew who sported a mustache... was quick to buy a keg so that he could drink with all of his men.

As an enlisted man I would have to say SFC Campbell (AKA Sgt Soup) Co C 1/3 Tiger Land Ft. Polk, LA '69. A "soldiers soldier" who set the example and led by it. Inspired young grunts to work as a team and perform at their best using a firm hand and a good sense of humor to prepare each of us for duty in Viet Nam.
The best officer would have to be MG John G. Kulhavi. I worked for him from the time he was a newly minted Major as a battalion XO until he got his star and served as ADC. A "rock steady" leader who gave me an open hand as a new company commander and was always available to provide support / guidance when needed.
It seems every new assignment he picked up, he would have me transferred to his section or command. We are still in touch and I consider him a true friend.

Best conventional combat commander - LTC (later COL) Philllip D Grimm, He assumed command of the 4th Bn, 3d Inf when the previous CO was relieved. His actions upon assuming command turned the battalion around. It became a case study at the Infantry Career Course.

Unconventional operations commander - COL Arthur D Simmons. The man was a real legend. Saw him get into both of Ross' residences in Dallas without a key. And he was pretty good at prisoner rescue operations as well.
