E6 in 3 years? Is there such thing as making rank too soon?

Well, I can’t really relate to the Army space , however I can share a similar USN experience. In a 100% promotion rate FTG , made Chief E7 in 9 years and wondered What’s next?” the Warrant Program had just been reinstated and that was the path I took. Retired as CWO 4!
Loved every day of 32 years!

yes I seen this while I was in the Marines it really depends on your MOS You can make rank faster on the combat MOS side 0311 etc

Back in the late 60s or early 70s the army was so short of NCOs in Vietnam that they had a shake and bake NCO academy that promoted you to SGT in about 5 or 6 months. A graduate could then go to Ranger school. E-4s were promoted to E-5 and E_5s were promoted to E-6, all in less than 9 - 10 months of active service. Of course, this was a guaranteed next stop in Vietnam

I also joined at 17, four days after turning 17 I was sworn in at the Los Angeles Induction Center and before sunrise the next day was in the reception center at Ft. Polk! My first tour in Vietnam began less than four months after my 18th birthday. Was a Pfc, E-3 at that time. After that year was a Sgt, E-5 and, after a 6 month extension on my tour re-enlisted as a Ssg, E-6 still 19 years old! Didn't feel like a teen, was almost 20 going on 50. Combat ages one dramatically and I never felt that I was promoted too soon. In your case that may not have been true, some are ready for rank and responsibility, others not.

I say Yes. Though there are rare individual who adapts, adjusts, and is wise enough to handle the responsibilities of rank. I've seen the mistakes they make, and the potential for loss of life. I'm all for fast promotions, but they should be limited to certain MOS/Ratings. Rank should be earned, never Given no matter how quickly one can pass a test, read a book, or complete physical requirements. When the lives of others are at stake, give me a seasoned and Wise veteran every time.

Yes sometimes the fast track to rank is also the fast track to failure. My last tour to Afghanistan I was doing the job of the E6 as an E5 because those that outranked me didn't have the experience or knowledge to do the job. It irritated the me, that I was penalized because I preferred to be a subject matter expert instead of in a leadership position. I ended up retiring as an E5 in 2016 with 20 years in and 12 years time in grade.

During Vietnam i got ther E-2, left E-4. My Second tour I got there E-4, left as E-5. My third tour got there as E-5 left E-5 (due to doing an OJT out of my primary MOS). I left E-5 My primary MOS was 11B and did an OJT tour as 95B and was awarded secondary MOS 95B. Didn't make E-6 until my tour in Korea, 1975-1976 as 11B.

I'd say it depends on age, background and experience, the combination of which can still result in a solid Petty Officer or NCO. I made PO3 in a little over a year (Corpsman); got busted and promoted again. Left the Navy for the Army and entered as a PFC. Made SGT in 3 years and SSG 2-1/2 years later. SGT and SSG were probably the most enjoyable (as in fun) ranks for an MP. I was up for SFC when I ETS'd and a small part of the reason I was willing to leave was a police job, and the fact that E-7's in the MP Corps VERY RARELY worked road duty or actual law enforcement duties. I hated the idea of ending up at a desk.

I See Many Comments Saying They Had Advanced Too Rapidly...
I Enlisted On My 17th Birthday And Placed In Situations Where
I Was Temporarily In Charge Of Others With A Higher Rank;
I Don't Recall Having Any Problems... So Is It The Advancement Which Occurred To
Rapidly Or The Maturity Which Was To Slow?..... Having Been In Corporate Management
Or Business Ownership All Of My Adult Life, I've Never Experienced Any Problem Adjusting To Either... It Was As Though, When The Situations Arose, All I Actually Did Was Adjust To Them And Continue On... But It Was Nearly Unnoticeable; It Just Happened With Little To No Effort..
