There's a ton of great content out there dealing with military subject matter (training / operations-related, motivational, entertaining & educational, historical, etc.); the idea is to have a fun and thought-provoking discussion, and to learn a thing-or-two while we're at it. If you can remember details but not the title; no worries, just post a description, and we'll activate the RP network to help find it. Here we'll discuss those defining sources that influence us, our culture, as well as public perception and opinion... sort of a representation of the "art-imitates-life, life-imitates-art" concept. Well, there's certainly some memorable content out there, I have my favorites and I'm sure that that you all do too. So, strap on your seatbelts, pull-up a keyboard, and let's get this thing started; thank you for all that you do, and... see you all in the discussion threads!

Forest Gump, because he was a hero and didn't know it. He and Lt Dan took care of each other and he took care of Bubba's family... basically he just took care of business regardless of what other people thought.

Band Of Brothers, why because the directing was perfect and the acting was spot on. Its the ambitious and realistic depictions of war I have ever seen in a television show or movie. Hands down my favorite.

Good Morning Vietnam. It was "enhanced," but still reflective of my tour with AFVN.

Here's a great History Channel production on Air Force One, if you haven't viewed this one before, it's worth taking a moment to watch:  http://www.history.com/shows/history-specials/videos/secret-access-air-force-one?m=5189717d404fa&s=All&f=1&free=false

Some of my other top military movies:

She Wore a Yellow Ribbon - The Duke
Rio Grande - The Duke
7th Cavalry - Randolph Scott
Fort Apache - The Duke
Horse Soldiers - The Duke

My years in the Cavalry has warped me even more and I have served twice with the 7th Cavalry; 4-7 Cav.....     :-)

Band of Brothers (mini-series)
The Revolution (mini-series)
The World at War (mini-series)
The Civil War (mini-series)
Gettysburg (movie)
Gods and Generals (movie)
Saving Private Ryan (movie dramatization)
We Were Soldiers (except for the "final" battle scene which was not true to history)
They were entertaining but stayed true to history.

I would have to say the Ranger school Promo videos are awesome. They are not for the weak or faint hearted. They are very vulgar and offensive, especially to marines. Just so you know there are three videos out there.

I love watching military videos of foreign militaries marching in parades.  The old Soviet Union had marching down to a profession, and while I don't like North Korea, they also march very well.

Hate 2 say it, but so did the Germans in WWII....

By the way, the Marines are probable some of the best marches of all the US branches!

SGT Lucken, ENS Kellogg, here you go, we've got the Hell March for the U.S. Marines a WWII Hell March and a photo of Marine Barracks 8th & I in action... this should supply some motivation for a little while at least... enjoy!  PS it seems there's a Hell March for almost every country you could imagine, although IMHO the U.S. is still the best! *chanting... "U.S.A., U.S.A, U.S.A!"* :)

Watching the TV series MASH and Black Sheep Squadron with my dad growing up. Up to date series would have to be the HBO series Pacific and Band of Brothers. Movies hmmmm so many, Platoon, We were soldiers, Full Metal Jacket, Men of Honor, Hamburger Hill, Enemy at the Gait, Kelly's Heroes, Heartbreak Ridge, Lone Survivor, I seriously could go on and on haha. But those are a few of my favorites anyways.

SPC Theresa Martinelli I love Band of Brothers. Even the music score was excellent and fit the material to a T. I often wonder where expressions come from and some were before our great great great grandparents. Respect is what earns respect and if they don't give that, we cut our losses and move on.

I enjoyed the TV Series "Tour of Duty". The show documented as close as possible the terrible conditions that the soldiers endured in Vietnam.

Down Periscope. If you're going to volunteer for submarines, you have to understand, we're just a crazy bastard bunch of misfits that don't play well with others. Most accurate movie ever as to real submarine life.

There was really only one good thing in Down Periscope, Lauren Holly. I have used this pic in another thread, but bears repeating here.

CMDCM Gene Treants. . . . and I thought those guys on subs had no real appreciation for women . . . other than the performance the guys put on with each other . . . just for show . . . and for political correctness in public. That photo was in front of a diesel boat . . .

God only knows what those guys do for so many months underwater on a modern nuclear boat . . . particularly when crossing the equator . . . where I gather sailors exhibit some of their worst behaviors . . .

While I understand and support opening every MOS to women . . . I am not so certain I would be keen to ship out with so many terrible reprobates awaiting good Christian enlightenment and salvation . . .

Warmest Regards, Sandy

1LT Sandy Annala her uniform probably fit better at one point, but washing in Salt Water tends to shrink clothing. Plus a high calorie diet on the old pigboats could have caused her to gain a little weight.

More modern Subs have much more hospitable living conditions. I have ridden a few of the Ohio Class and and very impressed with the berthing and mess conditions.

The biggest problem with any submarine is making sure the number of surfaces equals the number of submerges. You never know for sure that is going to happen. I personally feel that there is something inherently wrong with any ship designed to sink at all.

WWII based=Combat! Vic Morrow was the man! My son's middle name is Caje from the tv series

Vietnam based= Tour of Duty (despite the cheeseyness in later seasons)

Favorite movie of ALL TIME=Hanoi Hilton. I am powerless to turn it off no matter how many times I see it on tv. God bless our POW's!
