I am fascinated by the old bases and barracks. A simpler time and more old school and now I get why the older vets felt the way they did and do.

My husband and I watched the film with interest. It was my first duty station. We closed it down in 93 and both participated in the final ceremony on the parade field.

I remember Light fighter field as well, I was there from 91-93, Aco 1-18 inf. Buffalos. I believe the old iron drill sgt. Statue is still there. Our unit also pulled gate guard occasionally out at the main gate. I've probably waved you on by.

Well I can't say I remember it ever being a base, but my father lives in Monterey, and we used to go out to Fort Ord all the time to just mess around. I remember some people turned the prison there into a paintball park, with an inside arena throughout the complex and an outside field inside the prison yard. It was pretty cool. Too bad it got shut down because the neighbors nearby complained that the paintball guns were scaring the horses.

Yeah that is too bad. It seems any time someone wants to enjoy themselves (like with racing) someone has to rain on it.

I had the privilege of going TDY to NPS in Monterey. If I get to go again I will have to explore Fort Ord. In Atlanta the signs are still up on the railroad for fort McPherson

Yes do visit and take some pictures. In all honesty I still dream of the barracks with the steep roofs and facades. Something like reverence.

Roger will do. The barracks from the video remind me of ones at FT McCoy

SSgt (Join to see), when I lived in Cincinnati, our USAR center was in Fort Thomas, KY, as in where Johnny Bench was inducted into the Army, c. 1964. By the time I got there in 1981, there were virtually no buildings left. It was like it never existed!

SSgt (Join to see), Johnny Bench and Pete Rose were both in the same Army Reserve unit at Fort Thomas, KY. Pete Rose is second from left and Johnny Bench is second from right.
