Not only "no", but "hell no." Don't do it. Keep control of yourself even when those around you are losing it. Once the other guy starts screaming, you've already won. Let the "senior" person vent their anger all they want. BTW if it's fake anger trying to get a response out of you, then you will completely defeat them by remaining calm and professional. Give them a "yes, sir (or sergeant)" when appropriate. Being professional and showing proper respect for the person's rank or position nearly guarantees you won't be punished further, given NJP, or charged under the UCMJ for insubordination.

I know this is difficult. The end result is worth it.

I was an ET2 on a straight stick frigate. One evening a radar repeater in CIC was acting up, but they wouldn't let me work on it because they had an exercise coming up. Five hours later (1:30AM) the exercise had been canceled and they racked me out to fix it. I lost my cool with the Operations Officer (a LT). I didn't under stand why if it waited five hours it couldn't wait until morning. He just let me vent, I suppose because he knew I was very good at my job.

In Iraq as an E5 I got in a heated debate with a captian and company commander of a sister unit. It was in regards tona change in the middle of a convoy that would ad unecessary time, and put us in harm, and separate us for an expended period of time...needless to say after a couple of Fbombs from me, we went with my plan!!!! Common sense beats book every time!!!

No. Usually, such instances are a clash of egos, not a case of clear right vs clear wrong. There are no winners when egos clash. Just embarrassment and display of emotional weakness. If it's important enough, I get an objective third party involved. If it isn't crucial, I disengage and carry on with my business.

I have never been in a yelling match with anyone above me in my vhain of command. I have occasionally politely corrected one in private.

However, I did once yell at an E-6 from another unit when when I was an E-5.

My unit was entering the main gate at Camp Arifjan and the line at that time was VERY long. Suddenly 3 trucks from another unit drove up and tried to cut in line. I told the E-4 driving my truck to close it up and be sure they didn't get in.

After a near collision with one truck, the driver got out and yelled at my driver. Unfortunately one of the trucks had managed to cut ahead of us and we were at a dead stop while the gate security sorted out why a truck not in our unit was in our convoy.

I got out, walked to his window and proceded to lecture that E-6 in a very loud and angry manner, on why his trucks just screwed everyone in a mile long line to enter the gate.

His only response when I asked him if he understood was a sheepish, "Hooah, Sgt."

I only got in a yelling match with an NCO once and he wasn't even from my platoon, luckily I was fortunate enough to have good NCO's above me. The parking at the barracks on Ft Rileywas two rows-one facing the barracks, one facing the street. The large parking lot at the chapel was across the street but some married personnel were too lazy to walk 300 yards so they'd park in the lane at the barracks blocking in up to six cars. It was enough of a problem the MP's wouldn't do anything unless a car was damaged. Saturday if I wasn't on duty, that was my day to catch up on errands( PX shopping, gas, car maintenance, etc) and there was a car parked directly behind my pickup! A lime green Cadillac ghetto cruiser I knew belonged to an E-6 from another platoon. I tracked him down and he refused to move it, said it'd only be a few minutes and he'd leave. Two hours later it was still there. My truck had a plate steel bumper, so I drove it forward onto the sidewalk, then put it in reverse and plowed into his car hard enough to mangle the rear door and cave the trunk! He come running out screaming, thinking he was going to intimidate me, tried to lock me at parade rest and I told him to go to hell. He called the MP's and got ticketed for blocking a fire lane! I was senior enlisted man in my section at that time and my section chief( another E-6) was concerned so he had a meeting with me and the rest of the section NCO's, when I told them what happened, my squad leader started laughing and said "f_ck that prick! His stripes don't give him the right to disrespect single personnel like that! My First Sergeant was an E-7 filling the slot, my former platoon Sergeant, next time he seen me, he shook my hand, told me that SSG had a God complex and a few weeks prior Top had went off on him when he came in on a Saturday to find that boat parked in the spot that had a sign on it-"reserved for company First Sergeant ", and if he complained to him, he wouldn't have an ass left!

Does telling 1 to pull over the GSA so you can beat their ass count?? And calling them a pu$$y for talking big but not backing it up in front of a vehicle of fellow SSG's and SFC's count? Then telling them to shut up and drive? ... Shouldn't call people a little bitch after they call you out for drinking and driving in a GSA the night prior... just saying.

In my short time, I haven't had a yelling match or very outward disagreement with my leadership. My team has a pretty good culture - if you disagree and time allows, we can have open discussions of what we think should or shouldn't be done, and if time doesn't allow, leadership cuts you off and we press on.

Sad as it sounds, I did blow the living hell up on one character who basically shat in his own SGM's face via his ill judged decision, but that was in a time and galaxy somewhere prior to 1993. You better have your shit tight in one sock if you feel that kind of froggy

Never had a supervisor who would tolerate nor whom I disrespected so much that I would. I have on rare occasion told one that I would do what was being asked only if it was a direct order.
