Enlisted or Officer, have you ever worked for someone and then been promoted faster and had them wind up working for you? If so, did it cause issues? I've had it happen twice. The NCO who was my PSG when I was an E5 wound up being my PSG when I was a PL. And my PL when I was 2LT assistant PL wound up being my XO when I was Company Commander.

In the early 60s I saw a Major get reduced to A2C. He was in a small office and went from OIC to lowest rank in the office. THEN the action causing the reduction was reversed and he once again became a major and OIC.
It pays to respect everyone because one never know what tomorrow will bring.
The is a line form a song - "be nice to the little guy on your way up because you'll meet him on your way down."

My boss in Germany was a GS-13 in the G6 shop when I arrived as a CPT. About 1 year in, there was a reorganization and I was put in charge of the section with him as the deputy. No issues as the CG wanted green suitors as the OICs and CIVs as the deputies.

I know a guy who was a 1LT when I got back in the guard as an E4. I made MAJ and this guy had just pinned CPT.

I had a young Pvt (E1) 0311 work for me in in the S2 shop. He later became one of my Snipers and ended up getting promoted to Sgt while I was still a Cpl. Great Marine. No issues. Different MOS's promote at different speeds due to the promotion system.

I hated that when I was in the Marines. I spent almost 3 years as a lance cooley and watched the comm guys get promoted left and right that picked up in less than 2 years at times.

Sgt Aaron Kennedy, MS
1LT (Join to see) - I wasn't so worried about it. Had I stayed in, I would have pinned SSgt several years (right at 8 years) ahead of him (he would have been at 10-11 during that era). Needs of the Corps dictates promotion rates within MOS.

Of course it's MOS dependent. I left the Corps as a Sgt, having LAT moved to Comm from my original MOS. Everyone had to bide their time to a certain extent but as long as you can breathe and at least get promoted to E-4 in every branch except the Corps. I saw guys EAS as terminal lances because they were in MOS's were the cutting scores were either too high or the scores were always closed out. My MOS was closed to CPL for nearly 2 years.

Yes I have and they always told me to either slow down or fall back in the Rear!

There was an NCO in my first NG unit that was pretty high speed. Young E5 that seemed to always be squared away and knowledgable. I commissioned left the guard to go reserves and he was assigned in my unit. He'd been kicked out of the guard and went back to the reserves as an E4. I took company command and he ended up getting putting out of the Army. Small world though.

I had a my former 1SG take a civilian job as a cq at the Holding Company I worked with. Did not outpace him, but he worked for me.

SSG John Thornton - We hired civilians, because of the transitional nature of the company. It was a medical and administrative holding so the turn over was crazy. Some people were there for a few hours to a few weeks and they left immmediately when cleared. We had 3 permanent party enlisted and one officer. The civilian CQs saved so many headaches! I loved having them.

This was at Camp Atterbury which was a mobilization and demobilization site for the National Guard and Reserves. Things were often unique to that post.
