M 14 rifle demonstration
The US Rifle, Caliber 7.62, M-14 was officially phased out in the middle 1960s and replaced with the M-16. The M-14 was modified into the M-21 Sniper Weapons System, and has been brought back into use in Iraq and Afghanistan. For those that have been using it, how do you like it, in comparison with the M-4/M-16.

Used one back in 2002 as a DMR. Big, heavy, accurate. If you want something far away to die it's a better option than the 16.

It was the most accurate rifle I fired in the military. Even on full auto it would keep a three shot burst on target at 150 yards.

I used one about 40 + years ago .   It was not a rifle I would put on my list of must have or go to weapons .  I look at how much weight am I lugging around in the weapon as well as ammo .  To how many rounds of suppressive fire it can lay down .  I could always hit what, I was shooting at no matter what I was using .  If I was in a sniper role I would go with a 308 .  It is bolt action and it is all about the single shot at a distance .  If you want a good semi auto,  go with a 22-250 .  Light weight and accurate very fast round speed and good penetration and stopping power from a small round.

Has anyone used the M14 rifle and what are your thoughts about that rifle?

The M-14 is a great weapon; one of the finest I've ever had the privilege of using. However, while it WAS replaced by the M-16 (and later the M-16 by the M-4), it is no longer fair to compare the two. Variants of the M-14 are still in use today, but for different purposes than the standard M-4.

As a general combat rifle, I'd keep my M-4 (or one of its variants); however, I'd choose the M-14 every time for anything long distance. I own a semi-automatic version and absolutely love it.

Have you had your hands on the 16" barrel M1A? I am a huge m14/M1A fan and would rather carry the shorter m1A than a M4 or M16. It is so nice.

When I was stationed in Korea in the 90's my guards had them and had to qualify with them. I got to play with it also and loved it over the M16. The time I spent on the range with them brought me to question why they evergot rid of
F them to begin with.

Never fired an M14, but I have an M1A Scout in my closet. Good rifle, but for general purpose work, I'd still choose an M4 variant. The M4 is lighter, handier, and has a larger combat load for the same weight.

I still lament selling my early-vintage M1A to pay for my college tuition and books.

I wish I still had both it and my AR-180.

Yes, I qualified as a Marine Rifle Expert with the M-14.  By far the best weapon I have ever fired for accuracy.

Crap 3 minute gun until you replace the barrel and a couple of other things then you can get it to run a little under an MOA. "Big Army" and most commanders have no idea what they are doing when it comes to the implementation of precision weapon systems. FYI, very very few of the M14s have been converted to the M21s.

True about the M21s, SSG Adam Wyatt, but there have been tons of them converted into EBRs.

And the folks who came up with the EBR upgrade found that a properly fitted modern stock was really all most M14s needed to bring their group size down to 1 MOA.

1LT William Clardy I'm going to have to disagree on that one. While the EBR stock (not upgrade) while mounted right does reduce excessive barrel whip, it doesn't do anything for the fact that they are 50 year old +/- guns with rack grade components. Some of them shoot fairly well as they come but consistency is key.

My primary source for that claim of inherent accuracy was a published interview with the Rock Island team doing the conversions, where they stated that they had only encountered one rifle which not shrink its groups that far with the stock change, SSG Adam Wyatt.

I presume that they did have some minimum standards for selecting rifles to pull out of storage for, and I may have forgotten any mention of replacement parts (although my recollection was that the Rock Island guys really emphasized how accurate the service-grade components were turning out to be). Your comment about barrel whip makes sense, but I also have always considered replacing a walnut stock with an aluminum frame to be a bit extreme in terms of adding rigidity.

I trained on one during Squad Designated Marksman school and then was actually assigned one as my personal weapon during my 2013 deployment to Afghan. I loved it and got to fire it a few times in combat. Excellent piece of equipment.

I qualified with it in '68.
Heavy and competent.
Able to perform a sex-change on a fly at 100 yds.
Glad I didn't have to carry one in Vietnam.
Would like to get a SOCOM knock off.

We had both the M-14 and M-21 before they were replaced by the Barrett. Very accurate and easy to fire. Still one of my favorites.
