Have other prior service members automatically received a Joint Service Commendation Medal when switching services?

I am currently active duty Army, but was previously active duty Marines. I dropped off all my COAs and commendations and basically everything I had from before at S1. I followed up with them a couple times and the NCOIC of the shop concerned with me over the phone that everything was uploaded and should reflect on my SRB in a few days. So far the only thing that has shown up is a JSCM. I did not have this award before and I am wondering if this is a mistake or if this is something other prior service members have received.

Yeah I thought it seemed a little off. It’s just been hard to get straight answers being prior service of another branch.

SGT (Join to see) - I've heard that from other folks as well. One guy couldn't get his jacket straight because the Army assumed the Marines had entered an award correctly. He chose to not wear it since he knew it wasn't earned but the Army still recognized it as if he had. Worst case you'll be in the same boat. Best of luck.

Makes sense. Not a lot of common knowledge on the prior service stuff. Seems like kind of a gray area. TSgt David L.

If you never worked for a joint Command, ie. for instance working in the USMC, while the Commander and part of the staff were Army or Air Force, etc. then it was awarded in error. You would know if you had ever served in one of those.

lol yeah ive had mine messed up millions of times from switching over. It became such a pain I told them to leave it how it is. It took them 5 times and 3 different S-1 shops to figure out how to put a NAM and a NUC in the system. I literally had to sit down and find the abbreviations for them. Most of my record is ipermed but my srb is always jacked up. So I don't have everything on there but the stuff that is on there I have so I just wear that when I get DA photo done that way it matches. It gets frustrating with S-1 shops but I have all my documentation so at almost 18 years now I just keep it moving lol.

I had several periods during my career where I served under Joint Commands and Joint Task Forces, and almost always there were issues with some sort of records due to misunderstanding of the documents (ie different branches of service), where they were supposed to go, and when they needed to be uploaded/updated. Sometimes you have S1 sections that had multi service clerks (one of each military branch) to sort out this kind of mess, but often times they were shortchanged on personnel. Make sure you check your iPerms as well as your SRB in the next week or so. They should be reflective of BOTH. If they are not there, it will be time to "cordially pester" the NCOIC to recheck until it is right. When it comes to records, it is not like fine wine, it doesn't age well.

Definitely a mistake. I've switched services twice now and things get jacked up. You just need to stay on top of your records. Sometimes you have to sit with the clerks and translate things from the service you're coming from to the one you're joining.

Mistake. Get it fixed.
Thank you everyone for the advice. I was able to go get it straightened out today. They removed the award and added the correct stuff.

There is no automatic Joint Service Commendation Medal, obviously.
Do you have a Joint Meritorious Unit Award that they could have mistaken for that in the drop down?

Nothing is earned by switching services. Joint Commendations come from Joint Service as in operations, not transition. These are your records ensure to keep copies and periodically verify what is posted. Thank you for your service.

I didn't realize how much schooling and training was not on my DD214 until I got out is there a way for a servicemember to check when they are actually in?
