Have you seen military posers in person?

It was years ago, but I picked up a hitch hiker decked out in Special Forces attire. I asked him what his MOS was and he didn't respond. So I asked, "You know. Your specialty?" And he answered with, "Night Fighter." I let him off by the side of the road and advised him to take off that stuff before he gets himself beat up by a real SF soldier.

Hell, I just want a picture with this guy......I'd be the one in tears laughing hysterically.

On moral grounds alone, nobody who was not in the US military, should not misrepresent themself
as having been in.

I really have never given a shit about people wearing ordinary gear. It's good stuff. I get a little irritated when I see rank or rate devices on people who are obviously not in the service - those are for people who earned them.

I will say this, though - if a guy starts telling stories out of school about things he didn't do, I'm likely to embarrass the hell out of him. I read a post on Facebook the other day in a Navy group where a guy wrote about having to pull a four-hour "reactor room" watch after working all day on the flight deck of a supercarrier, in a discussion about long chow lines. This is obviously false for a number of reasons, not only because you can't stand watch in an operating reactor space (it would result in your immediate death) but because non-nuclear trained personnel aren't even allowed near those spaces, let alone to stand watch there - I'm a Navy Nuke, so I'd know. Not to mention that no nuke would call a Reactor Compartment a 'reactor room'.

So yeah, I humiliated that guy. Be proud of your service and what you really did. Lying about it just calls into question the value of your actual service.

As for civilians pretending to be veterans... I just feel sorry for them. I take it as a compliment when mentally challenged folks want to be like us. I take it as pathetic when regular folk pretend they were one of us. But I don't need to punch them in the throat. I'm the real fucking thing. I have nothing to prove.

I ran into a character at an Army Navy Surplus Store just south of Idaho Falls, Idaho. He goes by the name of William Clark or Clark Williams. This guy pretend to be an Airborne Ranger/SF Captain. When I confronted him, he claimed that he was General Wesley Clark's son and General Mark Clark's Grandson. Look up his story, he's the all time worst poser.
