Hello all,

I’m currently 21 years old and a junior at Washington State University majoring in Accounting and Information Systems. I have a gpa of 3.80 and a transfer gpa of 3.35 from my prior community college. Assuming I could do well on my PT (270-300), how competitive am I for acceptance into OCS. I don’t have any professional experience and only have had limited leadership roles. But I’m motivated and passionate to serve and join and believe I have what it takes to become a great leader.

I think you are competitive, but you are barking up the wrong tree. You need to talk to a recruiter.

Major Landgren,
Yes, a very serious consideration. It’s been a bit disheartening reading about the other candidates who seem older and have more experience. So I’m trying to get feedback as to how I can be competitive and create the best packet possible.

You need to talk to a recruiter to determine what processes you must indulge in. I would also have you google and research the roles and responsibilities. Do take this seriously so you have an inkling of what a military officer dies. I also adamantly tell you to brainstorm why you want to become a military officer. Consider what you have to offer and what is appealing, but not limited to that. Encapsulate those thoughts in one simple one page essay that you can memorize by heart. Be bold. Don’t say I would like to be an officer. Say I have always wanted to be an officer. Don’t be esoteric and say something like I am a butterfly but the flapping of the wings can create a tornado. Don’t worry about tactical skills on the essay as they will treat everyone equally as nobody knows anything. The primary reason for the esssy is an essay is part of the OCS packet. The secondary purpose is for you to inculcate in your mind knowledge and confidence to discuss your endeavor to become an officer. This will prepare you for interviews for requisite letters of recommendation. I would give you feedback on questions you have, but I want you to conduct the research, brainstorm, and write the essay. I would also propose you look at the various army branches for your edification and general knowledge. Also, think about leadership in an organization. When you have rolled up your sleeves and did the heavy research, then and only then will I have a meeting of the minds to improve, clarify, and educate you in the parameters of being a military officers and roles and responsibilities. I look forward to hearing back from you. Do a great job an impress me. James L.

Just curious why you want to go OCS as opposed to ROTC. Are you already in a Guard or Reserve unit?
