I remember when I joined in 1996 I was a young punk and what was wrong with the Air Force. I have seen the same mentality towards all new enlistees throughout the years. I believe it is the differences in mentality and communication betwee. The differing generations. I am curious to hear your thoughts on this issue.

1996... You young punk... Just Kidding SMSgt (Join to see)...
I think we older generations tend to believe the next generation(s) are weak, lazy etc. and we had it much harder back in the day. I don't believe that anymore. I believe we all are prone to say such things, like the oldtimers did when we came in. They are different like I was (in 1980) and like you were in 96. But, different is not bad, it is just different. Your challenge, as a leader (our challenge) is to figure out what motivates the younger generations and then to get the most our each of them, and also to help them achieve their max potential. Our real job, as military leaders is training the next generation to replace us, ensuring the organization continues to improve...
I remember, after 911, we thought the young Soldiers in the Army were soft, and didn't have what it takes... and weren't "hard" like we were back in the day... How wrong we were.
I often wonder, if I would still join the Army... in a time of war...

I have heard my whole career as I progressed in rank how bad we were screwing up. Especially from older and or retired First Sergeants, but yet the new First Sergeants managed to take care of business without mission failure. All is lost indeed. That type of thought process and talk is what motivates me to prove them wrong.

Very true SFC Sczymanski. I wonder if there is a way to change this train of thought. Or is it just human nature?

I've often wondered if during the early days of the human race the older cavemen (in their 30's) said "Kids these days are soft- in MY day we didn't have stuff like fire or sharpened sticks or animal skins!"
I think everyone needs to get off their high horse and examine their own faults.
