How do you feel about the American flag being modified?

At the ROTC program that I'm temp cadre with, a lot of the Greek organizations do this; they have flags with their letters in the Union area and then the stripes in their organization colors. Personally it irks me (especially since being Greek myself, I know frats and some sororities have their own flags) However there's really nothing that can be done. They haven't modified an actual American Flag so to me, even though I find it annoying and kinda stupid, it's no harm no foul. If an actual Old Glory was to be modified to fit another purpose however, that's a whole different story.

There is very specific circumstances where the coloration of the flag can be altered in my opinion, such as the black and white flag used for uniforms to blend in better. This rainbow crap though, I would be lying if I said it didn't annoy me. Not only have the changed the coloration but they altered the stripe count. I know what they're going for but if they want a symbol to use as their way of celebrating their freedom then why not use the normal American flag which is supposed to represent our country and our freedom? Seems like a pointless alteration to me.

I honestly think all of us service members/veterans agree that this flag annoys us at least a little bit (whether you want to admit it or not). However as some others have pointed out by this point it is no longer an American flag. As long as it doesn't start flying in front of government facilities I could care less.

I have a problem with any modification to the flag. When the Obama flag came out in 2008, it pissed me off as well.

Don't do it. The flag needs to keep the stars and bars like the original. People have tried to change it and the rainbow colors, I understand it's part of the gay movement but everyone is not gay. It's something else the news is hyping up ( gay right, black lives matter, white power, the black panthers) all of this could not be possible if it's was not for Old Glory. She supports everyone and everything. We are a nation of free people that people like us have defended her and her values. I'm very proud of Old Glory. The stars and strips forever. The Red White and Blue have a meaning and a history.

If people who are gay wish to have a flag...GREAT! But don't make it like the American Flag...For Pete sakes....get your own design...fresh, new individually for Gay Pride or whatever. Don't denigrate the US American Flag.

1SG (Join to see) - Thank you, I have seen a lot here in the US going back to the 1960's and have seen a lot in other countries where the people tried to exercise Freedom of Speech and they paid a heavy price; I live with bad memories.

CPT Pedro Meza - So, by the same litmus test, the gay flag burning is equally protected and the American Flag stands tall above and safe from those flames.

SSgt (Join to see) - All flag burning here in the US is protected speech, great country and we both know that they burn the US Flag too; which you can easily research on the web.

MSG Steve Howell I just don't see the Gay Pride Flag being similar to the American Flag at all. It's no different than the Buffalo Bills flag, are they making a mockery of the flag too? I don't like to see our flag being burned, but what can I do? What can you do? Who will stop such a thing? What will it take? You say you will never stand by and let it happen, but it does? Have you stopped anyone from doing it? I appreciate your input though.

MSG Steve Howell That's awesome and I applaud you for warding off a potential flag burning. It is something I have never encountered in my life. I've just seen the stories in the news and on TV. Good for you. Like I said, I am against the flag burning. We just have differing opinions on the Gay Pride Flag, Most NFL and College Flags, Other countries flags, etc. that have a similar look of our flag but symbolize something completely different. That's ok by me though. I can still respect you and your opinion. The slippery slope is if you can accept a Football team doing it but can't accept an LBGT group doing it, then the problem is with the lifestyle and group and not the look of the flag. Just my 2 cents brother.

MSG Steve Howell - The issues with having a law that restrains free speech such as flag burning, eventually leads to restrain on gun rights, which leads to no democracy.

I agree that modifying the flag is legal but does that make it right? For what it's worth... I'm a strong supporter of gay rights but I am also very protective of the American flag.

Our American flag should not be modified. If people want a gay pride flag, or whatever take any resemblance to the American flag out of the equation. Remember, the American flag is one many of our service members have given their life for!
