Recently I've been hearing countless remarks, and seeing posts from soldiers and veterans alike. Down talking our commander in chief. How do you feel about this? Should this be allowed within our ranks? Does freedom of speech really play a part?

This is America and I've paid my dues. I have the right to criticize anyone, anytime, anywhere I please.

First, veterans are not subject to UCMJ and can say whatever they like (short of threatening violence which is not protected as free speech). We all fought to protect the rights guaranteed in the constitution for ALL Americans, regardless of whether or not we agree with what they have to say. Our personal politics are subjugated to our professional obligations while we wear the uniform, so it doesn’t matter what you think about someone talking bad about the president. He is a politician and it comes with the territory, some will like them and some won’t. So it goes.

Secondly, and possibly more importantly, voicing our opinions is not only our right but it becomes our civic duty, especially when we become civilians (as we all a will hopefully do after our service is finished). Ben Franklin said, “dissent is the greatest form of patriotism”, so knocking people whose opinions differ from yours fundamentally conflicts with our duty to protect free speech for all.

Blindly following leadership is the quickest path to oppression. So, perhaps instead of vilifying people for disagreeing with what we want to believe, maybe we all try to grow up a little bit and actually try to understand what they are saying? I know it’s a crazy idea!! None of us knows everything, none of are perfect, and if you actually listen to another’s perspective you might actually learn something and grow as a human.

Stop being brain washed idiots. Listen more. Think more. Judge less. Be intellectually honest about the information you are consuming. Stop vilifying others for thinking differently. Grow up a little bit. And maybe you will someday grow into an adult!

I see no problem with questioning or critiquing a policy or a decision. But name calling and bashing family members, etc. is the sign of a bully and or self-centered brat not an intelligent reasonable adult.

While I was in uniform I kept my politics and feeling toward the CIC to myself! Now that I am retired I express my right of free speech and voice my opinions of their actions and their agenda's! I had no respect for Joe Biden, he was the weakest POTUS in the history of our country! Had very little respect for Obama, a man who could have changed race relations in this country for the better, but he only made them worse, that's my opinion! I have respect for the current POTUS even though I don't always agree with his tactics and the way he does things! I had hoped in this his second term he would have been more presidential in his actions!

If you are on active duty, sit down and shut the hell up.

If you're a veteran, you can say whatever you want, this is still America. However, I have a lot of trouble believing any of the "veterans" I've seen bitching online.

Veterans, not a problem. Active and retirees, be sure to be out of uniform and be low key on letting everyone know your status.

As someone who proudly wore the uniform, I believe we must never forget the oath we took to support and defend the Constitution. That oath doesn’t end when we retire—it stays with us. Veterans and service members absolutely have opinions, but we also understand that there’s a time, place, and way to express those views. Criticism of our nation’s leaders isn’t wrong in itself—but it should be thoughtful, respectful, and grounded in the values we served to protect.

At the same time, that respect must go both ways. Elected leaders—regardless of party—should honor the sacrifices of those who serve by protecting the benefits we’ve earned and speaking of our service with dignity. When policies or actions demean our contributions, it sends the wrong message—not just to us, but to future generations who are watching how this country treats its veterans. Respect is a two-way street.

Good afternoon CPL Paul B.. Excellent post. Thanks for sharing this brother Paul. He or she shouldn't do it because that's the CINC and he is in fact a part of their chain of command. Unfortunately, it tends to occur a lot now a days. :-<
