How has the military broken your heart?

Warning: this is not an invitation to disparage the service or separate individuals so abstain from those comments.
It does happen. You are passionate about what you do in the service. No other aspect of your life offers such an exhilarating thrill. You hear AC/DC's "Thunder" in the back of your mind each time you don your uniform. You did and continue to rise above yours and other's expectations of your competence. And the inescapable day arrives. You get kicked below your belt. You feel the cold of the knife that is stuck in your back. Your Icarus wings are melted and you crash with a noise of disappointment that only you can hear.
So what's your story? Is there a common and unyielding scourge in the military that has caused more heartbreak than any other?

Bastards made me retire! I would have done it till I dropped dead at the TACINTEL Posit! I loved what I did and I loved being in the Know about everything. Now I have to depend on the Media (Which is Crap) for my information. I miss reading all the Intelligence Briefs.
PTSD took several years pain and loneliness to find my "new normal". My prim and proper mother disowned me because I was different. It stung, but I was use to concept shit happens.
I have seen many young SM who could not salvage their marriages. They ended up losing their spouse and their families. What more can they lose? This broke my heart.

That would be the day the Army actually broke my heart.
October 5th, 2014.
The day my wife of 15 years told me that she didn't love me anymore because she felt I had chosen the Army over her.

First Sergeant, it reminds me of what I heard one of my NCOs say recently: "The Army is your spouse, and your spouse is the mistress." That's probably an old saying, but it's new to me. It's sad that we can't always please both the Army and our spouses. Thanks for sharing.

SGT (Join to see), there was more to the story - there always is - but that line from her really struck a nerve.
