Great little base. Especially if you like the outdoors. Elizabethtown is really building up and is nice. You are just a couple hours from indianapolis. Not far from Lexington KY and the bourbon trail. Lots of camping hunting hiking fishing kayaking close by. Not far from Nashville.
All of the older buildings on base have been rehabbed.
HRC is there. Cadet corps rolls through each year. Lots of reserve and national guard units rotate through there for training and a couple hours north at camp atterbury.
I love Knox and wanted to get mobilized there by they never wanted my AOC for a full time slot as a reservist.

Knox is not far for Louisville, it's about 100 miles to Lexington. I guess it amounts to what you consider Not Far. It's about 150 miles to Nashville from Ft Knox.

Grew up in the Midwest where 60 miles was a normal drive to anything like a mall or decent restaurants. All relative I guess. Elizabeth town has a lot of nice shopping and restaurants now compared to about 10 years ago. CPT Lawrence Cable

MAJ (Join to see) - That's why I made the comment about what you consider far. If you grew up in the Nebraska Sandhills or that Eastern Wyoming Dust Bowl where it is 70 miles between ANY town, then Lexington isn't far. Louisville and Southern Indiana have some very nice areas now with decent restaurants and shopping. Unfortunately for Louisville, most of it is not on the West Side.

The good news is that almost all of the WWII and Vietnam era buildings are gone.
The ones that are still there have had a recent upgrade and remodel.
The barracks and most permanent party areas are fairly new or recently upgraded as well as the motor pools.
Radcliff is the town just off post. It's completely dependent on Ft, Knox and they let their mouths write checks their asses couldn't cash. Then 194th deactivated, followed by the Armor Center moving to Ft. Benning. That brought them back to reality. You'll go into Radcliff and see a lot of empty business and run down buildings.
Someone mentioned cadets, every summer ROTC, West Point and VMA cadets come to Ft. Knox for TCAT. This is their summer camp and they will be all over the place.
It's not just the the cadets, National Guard and Reserve units will also rotate thru for their annual training. This can be a mixed bag.
My advice, stay away from both. Cadets and NG/Res can just get you into trouble.
I'm not bashing either, just saying nothing good can come from some of these guys.

Maj John Bell In 1953, we would pass the innocuous appearing Gold Repository and wonder, is ‘it’ really there?
