I have a friend who wants to get out of his Battalion and get into the inactive ready Reserve (IRR)so he could take his promotion and possibly go on a tour. He wants to get away from the flagpole and he speaks three languages . His command took their time to sign off and his Regional support command seems to have two speeds... Slow and stop!
What is a realistic timeline for getting into the IRR?

The first question I would ask is if they are eligible to go into the IRR based on their contract? If they are the soldiers S1 should be able to process the paperwork and like MSG (Join to see) said it typically takes less than a month.

Thank you! I went into the irr when I left the Idaho National Guard back in the spring of 2006. It took longer to get out of the irr then it took to get in it.

LTC Stephen Conway - It's the Individual Ready Reserve. The Inactive National Guard is also an option but only for a year and extends your contract for the amount spent in the ING. The IRR gives you the same 15 membership points a year as a regular drilling reservist but has no requirement to drill outside a muster called by HRC. However, you can still do drills to gain 50 total points a year to stay on the active list. No such option exists for the ING though.

Thank you, I told this individual that he could stay in the irr and go on tours. His unit will not give him his promotion for at least 6 months and that is a no-go for him! He wants to go into the individual ready to reserve so he can take his promotion and then come back in and go on a one-year tour outside the United States and away from his unit. He has already spoken to the people he would be working for outside the USA going title 10 but he is in limbo if you can't get into the irr. They also require him to be at the next rank to fill that position. Thanks for your input!

I requested it in April of 2000, it was given the green light in July of that same year.

Update, my friend finally got into the irr a year ago. He took care of some personal business and was picked up for a one-year mission in Africa. He is happy and productive. I am sure all what he's oing will be well-documented with his experience
He will make Lieutenant Colonel very easily once he completes his cgsoc in a few years.

On a good note, my friend went into the irr. He Took care of some family issues and got away from the flagpole. Now he's being picked up by one of the operator units and will be deploying worldwide. He has his choice of missions and many different commands are asking him to be with them. He has the skill sets, three languages and the top secret clearance. Military intelligence and civil affairs are skill sets he has. He will probably be deployed for most of the next year and a half in choice missions that he didn't even know existed. It took six to seven months for him to get into the irr with calling or visiting in person his regional support group, his Brigade command and numerous calls to Fort Bragg before he finally went into the irr.

I can only answer from my own experience. I enlisted into the IRR after completion of my full commitment of active duty. Upon that I received a copy of the IRR contract that day as I walked away from the out processing station. Entering into a USAR TPU 1 year later, took a bit longer than expected, S1 for the gaining unit submitted my copies, but the originals were never properly filed at Ft. Dix in 1982. Generally entry to IRR for enlisted is automatic after completion of the active duty portion of the contract. X years active and y years reserve service (IRR). Commissioned Officers fall into a different status, as I understand; generally keeping a Reserve Commission unless tending a resignation. You would need to check with an S1 section to comfirm.

My friend put his packet in 2 weeks ago. He is trying to go into the irr so we can go title 10 and go active duty to a tour that he's been dreaming of for a long time. His command is not want to let him go just to spite him. I think it will probably take a couple months because it is taking his time going to the Regional support command. This is a warning in case others want to do the same thing. If they want to get away from there command climate by taking a tour, be aware that the command May fight to the death to not let you go even though there is really nothing legally they can do to stop it from happening.

I was too young or didn't care about Dobie Gillis when I was a kid but I do remember him on Gilligan's Island. You can tell this guy was a pothead because he was lazy

Ed, you mean real life busted for pot? Kind of like Pee Wee Herman busted for jerking off at the theater? It's funny how sometimes art imitates life or life imitates art.

I purposely put that picture of the actor who played Gilligan to get people's attention.

Sir, Depending on the 88th or whoever he falls under. For us it is the 88th RSC. Packets can take anywhere from a Week to a Month depending on them. I have one at 140 days right now for an officer.
