I wish i could serve again i miss the camaraderie, field exercise (yes even those), the Green Machine, and seeing the world. I dont regret being retired because where the Navy was at they were not going to let me re-enlist because it was during the time when they were down sizing.

I would gladly put my uniform back on in a heart beat. Although after eight years the army MEB'd me.

I'm with you brother. I even had a thread dedicated to it. It stings a little less for every bit that you are willing to let go.

Medically Retired Against Your Wishes? | RallyPoint
This thread is primarily for those of us who were medically retired against our wishes.... I had 18.5 years in and was medically retired. I was beside myself with grief, anger, frustration, guilt, betrayal,.......... the list is endless. I was always going to be a 30 yr man and even then I was going to retire kicking and screaming. I mean, I have a 24 yr old tattoo of a Bradley fighting vehicle on my arm. Serving is all I wanted to do. To get...

I broke my back in 4 places and worked for 25 years never drawing unemployment through the rest of my time to retirement and through a few civilian jobs. I was told I should have been immediately discharged from active duty due to the severity of the break, but I was in such good shape it never even slowed me down. The operated on a ruptured disk in my neck but did not notice the broken back, and I was back on my ship 9 days after my surgery because my CO knew he would lose me after 30 days of convalescent leave and was golfing buddies with the CO of Portsmouth Naval Hospital! After 5 surgeries I am 100% disabled and did not apply for my disability until after my 5th surgery. They told me 15 year ago I had the spine of a 95 year old man! I would still serve if I could!

I miss being in, the camaraderie, the people. With the exception of a few leaders, I enjoyed my time in service, and would do it all over again

I miss it and the people, I know much has changed but if one got a good unit like some of the ones I had it wouldnt be that noticeable I believe.

You will find with many Veterans, they would do it all over again if they could!
Most veterans don't realize how good the military life is over civilian life, till they have gotten out and lived in the civilian world for a while! Then it dawns on them, the military life was so much better even though duty conditions were so much tougher.
Working nowadays in a economy where very few Americans are even veterans, life is even harder now for Vets then before! Most Veterans can related to each other, we know the stories and don't have to tell each other; what military life was like!
But civilians don't know and don't understand. In the military it was doing your duty as a military member and back each other's play! In the civilian world, it is how much of a buck can you make for the company and don't care whose toes you step on or who's back you shove the knife into!
I was in from 82-91, then worked as a Army Contractor from 91-00. 2000 on, is when I really found out how much I hate the civilian world. 2011 I went on permanent Disability, due to Scoliosis and fighting with VA now do to service-related illnesses/injuries that have caught up. I kinda enjoy the semi-retirement life away from working in the civilian world, although the pay sucks at the moment!!!!!!!!!

I wish I could have continued to serve. I miss feeling as though I was a part of something bigger than myself. I miss Soldiers.
