Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

Well, in today's kinder gentler military I say ok private snuffy. I need you to meet me later to sign this counseling statement.....but in the old days....Go get your camel back and meet me behind the company in full battle rattle....up....down...go....half right face....front leaning rest position...MOVE!

There are a lot of things an NCO could. Ucmj. You could try to take him aside an talon to him but never let them get away with it

Start chapter paper work to make an example of him. Failure to adapt, disrespect to an NCO, conduct unbecoming of a Marine

Sarge - I'm hoping you didn't back down in your assignment. If you did, he proved to you, himself, and to the rest of your troops/squad, that HE'S in charge, not you. In the "old days" there would have been instant assignment of an even "worse" task, and this would have gone on until such time as he got the "idea" that your authority, experience and stripes are far superior to his. He actually volunteered for service, and he should know the levels of authority and know it's also NOT a democracy.
