How would you react to an E2 who "smart mouths" you in formation?

Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

I would grab the dip shit by the stacking swivel and bitch slap him. Last time I did that was 1981 in Korea to an SGT who told me (SFC) he wasn't going to hump the PRC 25 on the force march. Threw him through the concertina wire and outside the compound. Oh, and he humped the radio that day. Times have changed. (I retired in 2010 with 39 years of service. I've seen the changes since Vietnam in the Army and they haven't been for the good)

Punish the entire group for his insubordination. No paperwork, just PT and restriction to base. The unit will get him straight on their own and the E-2 will learn a valuable lesson in that the group is more important than the individual.

Back in the day we called it WALL-2-WALL counseling!!!! There is NO TIME for insubordination... EVER!!!!

Take that one stripe and take his pay for 2 months making him an E-1 for insubordination...at least that's what would have happened when I was on active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps

They could be having a bad day or something else could be on their mind that is making them act that way, perhaps their wife asked for a divorce the other day. I'm sure we've all had moments where we've been careless and lost our military bearing because of external factors. I would have a talk with the soldier after the formation and determine if there is any problem the soldier is dealing with. If the soldier has a legitimate problem they are dealing with, I would sympathize but remind them that military bearing must be maintained for the good of themselves and the unit. If the soldier is continually belligerent, then I would recommend them for an Article 15 or offer them a non-physical punishment. From my experience, smoke sessions fix issues having to do with negligence but not so much disrespect or a bad attitude.

I agree with all replies posed. At no time should any disrespect be allowed. Reminded me of the 1 time I was disrespectful to an NCO. I did regret the action and paid the consequence.

I saw this in the early 70s in the SeaBees with p.c. and affirmative action and from the point of view the seamen doing the grunt work it was total bs . They got away with murder and nothing happened to them and since they couldn't be trusted to do anything important the rest of us had to pick up the slack . The military is not a social justice workshop and the slackers should have been stomped on hard right from the beginning . That's one of the reasons I didn't ship over

I am old school, my initial instinct would be to deck the maggot and send him to the brig for insubordination. Regardless, this puke disobeyed a lawful and should be brought up on charges, preferably discharged for his actions.

Personally i would make him the object of attention. I will not wall to wall counsel him in front of others but I will make sure he understands his place in the food chain and he will have crap duties for quite a while.

After I removed my foot from his ass, I let the chain of command have him.( I being his L/CPL (E-3 for you non-Marines) would then let the Corporal have him before the Sergeant would get his turn)

I am a U.S. Navy Vietnam Veteran PO 3 and in my day 1964-1968 the little shit bird wouldn't be able to back talk me or my mates because his jaw would have been broken. Then as now there wasn't and shouldn't be any tolerance for that kind of bullshit. In any situation emergency or combat there is no excuse for disobeying any order, or you may find yourself overboard in the middle of the night in someplace like the South China Sea or if you a Marine and part of a rifle squad in combat you might get shot from behind by an M-16, not that either ever happened, just saying.

Peer pressure works also. Don't release anyone until everything's complete. And have him pull watch over his battles while they are doing the work. Won't take long for him to get the point. Write nice little counseling that you read to him after everyone else has left. If that don't work light that but on fire in front of his peers while keeping your bearing. Write that counseling. And in no time at all he/she will get the point or a chapter
