Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

Smoke him/her with every exercise in the Military Training Manual and, if they refuse take their butts to the 1SG/Chain of Command for disciplinary Action.. Take that all mighty dollar from them and they'll get the idea real quick!!!!!

The first thing that I'd do, is Lock him up at Parade Rest!, while I continued to give out the remainder of the Tasks!, Then I'd Lock eye's with that young Troop, and tell him that he has two Choices!.......1) Conform to the Orders Given!, (Then Beat Face Till I'm Tired), or 2) Get Burned Hard for Insubordination!..........If He chooses (2), He's going before the Company Commander as a Minimum!, And I'm going for Max Punishment!

My E5 would've confronted the team leader, the team leader would respond with a team management class all of about 45sec. E2 shirtbird would quickly stand (kinda) and accept the order from said E5 and followed through and completed the task with the upmost vigor and determination!

My room mate was catching a ride to get haircuts one night. It was 15 degrees out, cold as hell. So I asked if I could tag along with them. Some boot that had been in that unit for a couple months texted us and called us lazy for not walking 3 miles in the freezing cold and 3 miles back. I privately texted him and said to watch his mouth and be very careful with who he is accusing of laziness. I'm a hard worker and nobody has ever doubted it. Thought I was being a fairly lenient NCO. WAs going to just let the kid off with that warning. The kid's tactful response was "I don't care about your threats, it's all just words to me."

The kid wasn't my marine, but his NCOIC was a good friend of his. I don't reach into another man's fridge without asking. So I called him up, sent him the texts and said, "I'd like to make him write me a VERY LONG essay on respect. My logic was that the worst thing you can take from jr. marines is their time. Shouting works with some. Going on a long ass run works for others. But time seems to be a pretty consistent pressure point. So it was going to be a 9 page, size 8 font, 0 spacing, no double spacing, normal indentation essay. Proofread too with no grammatical or spelling errors. Additionally, I'm a master of google searching key phrases to check for plagiarism.

Instead of obliging me on this, his NCOIC said "Nah, 6105." I was like "Bro, that shit's going to follow him. It's his first offense. Just let me waste his time, ruin a friday night or so, then call it even." They went with the 6105.

I feel like negative paperwork just gets handed out like candy nowadays. I get it, there's times when it's warranted, even necessary. But it's too many NCOs/Staff NCO's go-to punishment nowadays and I'm already seeing Marines reacting to threats of paperwork with scoffs and cynicism. They're starting to just not care about negative paperwork. We've sort of desensitized them towards something that can actually end up on their OMPF and affect them in the job market as civilians for even the slightest things. Just comes across as lazy. Instead of actually pouring effort into the Marine and trying to shape them through discipline, we just throw in a sprinkle of negative counselings and a dash of NJPs and hope that it's a good recipe for success.

It's not and they're growing indifferent to it.

Not allowed any more wall to wall counseling! I promise magic of pen on a counseling statement loss months pay and extra duty! Not to mention to whisper in snowflakes ear ( suck up buttercup cup and drive on other wise I will own your career for letting your battle buddies down) look him in the eyes and smile knowing the rest of my platoon got me covered! They will find weed themselves or adapt!

What worked real well for me, was to switch places with them (with command approval...) And tell them THEY have to pick someone. And tell them NO ONE is leaving formation until HE has chosen. No, he can't do it himself, he HAS to pick someone, and if it doesn't get done correctly, HE will be held accountable...

I picked a new guy every Friday to run the show for 6 months. Within a month, bitching dropped to zero and they all wound up knowing each others jobs, and overall effectiveness went up. All the other teams thought I was effing nutz. But my guys were awesome, and stopped bitching about stupid shit.

The trick, and here is the catch. When Smartass E2 finally sacks up enough to tell YOU to get the trash out, you better be willing to suck it up and do it. Because isn't that eventually the name of the game? Teach leadership? Teach accountability? At least I thought so...

From the late 70's to early 80's I made the whole formation pay for it. After the others "talked" to the E2 suddenly there were no more problems. Punish the group and let them handle it first.

Dismiss formation except soldier and his squad leader find out why Soldier funds it necessary to disobey a lawful command. If Eason stinks council him and list UCMJ Articles . Have squad leader make sure Soldier performs duty and withhold privaledges from Soldier give extra Training maybe write paper on conduct .Write everything out in counseling statement . Any further trouble refer for article 15

Knife hand to the face embarrass him in front of the whole platoon tell him to fall out and get into pt gear and all ncos in platoon take turns running his butt up a hill one at a time until he learns to never mouth off to a senior nco paperwork doesn't nothing but ruin a man's life but alittle pain and exercise builds character and respect for authority
