The sergeant has a different problem by as been in setting the tone for this to happen in the first place. That private his unit for a few months and shoots his mouth off like that? The relationship between the sergeant and the private is destroyed, but the biggest challenge is the unit under the sergeant's charge.

Never been in the military but doesn't the E2 understand why there is a chain of command? And isn't he supposed to follow all lawful orders without question?

Smoke the shit out of him. The private needs to know he's to follow orders given to him if the orders are not unlawful. If the private can't or will not follow simple orders in basic, the private is going to get him/herself killed or someone else.

Smoke the shit of him, restrict him to the Barracks, assign extra duties, take away privileges, and sign-out and in when he goes to church and chow.

I would tell him to stand fast. I would then proceed to counsel him if he persisted, I would then give him an Article 15.
