How would you react to an E2 who "smart mouths" you in formation?

Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

Depends on the situation, however, I would discipline with pt, immediately. Then have him conduct the order directly after. Reminding him the job would have been easier not tired from pt.
Or, I would drag him into the office have a formal discussion if not written.

send him to the commanding officer and let bust him down to E1 and spend a few days in the brig or choose to get his butt

If you can out push me with 3 count push ups. I'll give the task to someone else... If you can't! This will be your additional duty till you PCS, plus the smoking your gonna get after it's been completed, for disrespecting a NCO! This is your only option!

I don't know how it would be handled in "Todays" Army but I can assure you it would NOT have been Tolerated and Dealt with Accordingly

A throat punch is letting the E-2 off to easy. Individuals that are this insubordinate know only disrespect. Put them in their place at once. If afterwards the attitude is the same, then start with ART15 proceedings. Individuals like that are nothing but cowards anyways. Do not let them out, (that is what they probably want anyway) make them commit to the term of their enlistment, but make it a nightmare until they see the light and make a change.

First I would wonder how in hell he made it through boot camp to question an order/assignment. Then I'd call him out front and center. Ask him a question or two very gently as to not upset him like; with the brim of my hat bouncing off his forehead ask without too much spit flying out of my mouth. What are you doing in my army!? Where are you from!? Do you believe you're in command here!?! CAN I BE IN CHARGE FOR A WHILE?!? Then call the platoon to attention. Half right face. You know what comes next. (Preparatory command) in the front and leaning rest position; (command of execution) move! Push-ups forever; begin!
