Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

I will take my own time to properly motivate this millennial that there are no individuals in my Company! Believe you me, when I'm done with him he will either get with the program or ring the Bell!

I can tell you what happened to me in Basic Training, circa 1991, Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. I was caught toying with our newly issued M16A1. We were taking a quick break from Drill and Ceremony on a parade field, learning D&C with rifles, when I pointed it in the direction of a stand of trees. I was using the sight reticle. Some Sergeant Major was driving by and saw me. He got out of his car and chewed out my Drill Sergeants. Immediately our biggest DI, nicknamed "Conan" came over and slapped the shit out of my kevlar, threw me on the ground, kicked sand in my face, and I low-crawled in sand for 45 minutes all the while having sand kicked in my face. My kevlar helmet webbing dug into my forehead and was bleeding. I was choking on sand the whole time. I was told to get up after about 30 minutes, and Conan asked me if I was done being smoked. I defiantly replied, "No Drill Sergeant", as blood dripped down onto my tongue. It was mixed with sand and caked my face. He threw me down into the sand again, and I low-crawled for another 15 minutes. When I was asked to stand up again, he again asked me if I was done. I again defiantly said no, so he told me to go drink some water and called me a crazy mother_ _ _ _ _ _. I paid the price for a stupid act, which I didn't really think was wrong, but I learned my lesson. I believe that physical punishment worked in that situation. I wasn't doing that again, ever! I never got in trouble again after that in Basic.
