Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

Give him an alternate task. I.e. sweeping sunshine off the sidewalk.

I spent 8 years in as a SEABEE. I earned my (SCW). I was a Builder Second Class Petty Officer and I have felt with this a few times. The only for sure way that I found to deal with this situation is to make them remember that they signed a contract to serve and protect against all enemies foreign and domestic so feeling wronged and telling your NCO no about a job isn't going to matter and give them a kick in the ass. If you have to show them you will stand your ground take them to the nearest connex box or somewhere quiet and council them (beat the hell out of them) and if anyone asks y'all fell down the stairs. This will ensure they know ya aren't taking no for an answer

Make him do push ups until he tears his pectoral muscles and biceps. There is no need for smart asses in the military. If he can't do at least 300 push ups dishonorable discharge! He shouldn't have signed up to serve with an attitude like that. I would be in myself but because I am diabetic (Type 1 ) I can't! I would gladly take that scumbags place.

Quick response while maintaining the integrity of the unit. Soldiers need to respect chain of command no matter how small or big the mission is. There are rules and regulations for a reason. Obviously the UCMJ wasn't drilled into his small pea brain.

There used to be an event called "grass drill". I always thought it was a great event that often turned Proud Full-time Civilians (PFCs) into squared away soldiers.

He would never forget my response. Had one tell a E5 no in my presence once. The rest ran for the door.

Needless to say I would have hemmed his butt up. I just retired in '12 and even then we were getting in the "why me" Soldiers. It is directly on your leadership style what you will take.
I had an E-2 who's uncle was an E-7 in the OKNG call me one morning. He questioned me on why his nephew was not released yet to go home for the weekend for a family reunion. Mind you it was well before lunch on a Friday, notwithstanding right? My unit was in transition at the time to go over the pond to serve as Radar sections and our battery was split 7 ways from Sunday doing their own training, and deploying.
Of course I was wanted to ask him what the hell he was thinking calling and questioning me but I did keep my bearing.
At that point and time I was more pissed off at the SFC that he had the gall to call and question me.
The issue at hand. Police calling the barracks that he and the rest of the single Soldiers lived in.
Point to this, the why me crap is one reason why I am happy that I retired when I did.

Burn him. At no time is that kind of insubordination allowable. Make an example of him.
