How would you react to an E2 who "smart mouths" you in formation?

Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

Take the insubordinate out behind the CONEX and introduce him to slap-happy 1 and 2!

Immediate corrective action (drop, then discuss that the smell he was smelling was the shit he had just stepped in, while in the front leaning rest).....if he still refuses, platoon drops for him. Then UCMJ action.

Big difference now as years past... When I goy to to the 101st in Oct of 1973 as an E2 if a PFC told me to do something I damn sure did it... saw it change over 4 years to this scenario. I would give the young individual other peoples duties... volunteer him for guard assignments as well as CQ runner. Then have a long conversation with him on future assignments if attitude was not adjusted. In old days take him out and kick his ass. !!

I kindly respond by saying "I'm sorry for upsetting you, let me see if I have an assignment that better suits you young man/woman." Then I wake up in a cold sweat, realize I had a nitemare, find that E2 and kick his/her ass!!!

Explain to the troops that this private feels he is better than the rest and feels he deserves preferential treatment compared to the rest of them and then march them outside for unending PT until they all realize they must be one unit willing to do anything for one another. There is a lot of power in "peer motivation" when because of one asshole they all suffer...it is called peer attitude adjustment
