Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

The E-2 WOULD HAVE A MULTITUDE OF EXTRA DUTIES, FROM FIELD DAY THE BARRACKS, TO SPIT SHINING EVERY PAIR OF BOOTS IN THE PLATOON. IF HE FAILS TO COMPLY, THAN EVERYONE PT'S TILL THEIR EXHAUSTED, BUT NOT SO EXHAUSTED THAT THE E-2 WOULD SOMEHOW SUFFER FROM SOAP IN SOCK TREATMENT FROM PLATOON MEMBERS. OF COURSE NO ONE WITNESSES THIS ACTIVITY AS THAT WOULD BE A VIOLATION OF REGS.

Must respect his commands, no matter what. He is there for a reason Discipline. With out it the chain of command has a weakness. Rebellion leads to rebel not solider.

Very politely and professionally, rip them a new defecation hole (in private with witness) by reminding them that they did volunteer their duty to the military and if they can not handle the contract, help them find the door out. essentially, in my eyes, an equal response to the reaction depending on the severity of the transgression. (bear in mind, I'm not a kind person to "smart mouths" or disrespect. Fair yes, kind, no.)

My old Infantry response would be to smoke the whole section until they resolve the issue internally, but that's not really acceptable anymore. Today I would lock him up, send the rest off to accomplish their tasks then have a little counseling session, most likely will standing in that same spot. Explain lawful orders, article 15s, insubordination and all the other ways I can make his life a living hell. But, I'm old and mean...

It's about discipline and respect. And you NEVER talk back to a D.I. I saw it in 1976 once. It wasn't pretty and it sure set the tone for everyone else as it didn't happen again. Oh, and the Airman who smarted off? Didn't make it through Boot... Guess you could say he got the boot...

As an SP5, I would make a come-back that consisted of swamping him with my superior expertise.

I have to disagree with Gunnery Sergeant Pepper. If Pvt. Dipshit had enough disrespect dishonor himself in front of the platoon, then he needed weeded out. ASAP! A chain is only as its weakest link. Marines are disciplined to instant response to orders. There are no do overs if private shitbird, is insubordinate down range my brothers could die. He should have been arrested, escorted to the CO, then to the brig. He was fortunate that E5 did not straighten his collar nice and tidy, wink.
