Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

Personally I'm old school and I believe you have to lead with an iron fist and if you wanna be a smart mouth I'll give you that iron fist and bring you right to attention it's not abuse it's called respect and the soldier with the smart mout would either learn respect and always rember that or he'd go home crying to his mamma

Take him behind the barracks and shoot him. lol!
Actually, he should be punished in front of his fellow troops on the first offense. If he's been insubordinate before, punish his squad with him. They will pressure him to start behaving. If that doesn't work, then it's obvious that a military lifestyle is in-congruent with his perceived lifestyle. His enlistment should then be terminated asap...

Fall out to my left, you're right, and await further instruction. Dispatch the rest of the detail. Instruct the soldier to follow me to my office/S1. Write up the appropriate corrective document. Assign additional detail/corrective action that is lawful and does not put the soldier at risk of life limb or eyesight. Soldier agrees or disagrees, which will lead to the execution of corrective action/ additional detail or a review from the soldier's/my superior's authority (which will be approval for corrective action/detail). I will supervise the detail/action. The soldier will complete the detail/action. The soldier will report to me with the completion of detail or action. And then the soldier's performance of detail or action will be reviewed IN DETAIL through verbal and written report. And then we will never have to have this conversation again.

I will tell you what I did. I kicked him hard in the ass. He went on with his career and became a SgtMgr!

We call it a good smoking! A little extra physical activity until the new soldier understands his role, and his leaders role, and how they interact. Could be easy, could be hard, at some point he will understand that he has the choice of how his interaction with is leaders will be. if it continues past the first time, definite counseling and punishment such as article 15.
