How would you react to an E2 who "smart mouths" you in formation?

Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

I am now a very senior Colonel, though, many years ago I was a SGT. I remember in jump school (as an E2) I saw a student smart off to a black hat (instructor), several instructors took him behind a building, he emerged about 5 minutes later, he was a little ruffled and did exactly as he was told. My point, sometimes the old ways are the best. The military is not for everyone, if it was, we wouldn't be the elite of society. It is the job of leaders, CPL and above, to ensure young troops are grounded on basic discipline, the discipline that saves lives in combat. As for this case (and I was still a SGT) he would have remained in the front leaning rest position while I instructed him in the duty, permitted only to ask questions to clarify the task. Once the task was complete he would have completed PT in a mud puddle until he puked. I would never see such a thing today, if I did I would ask my SGM to handle it.

Say nothing and bring him up on charges. In a disciplined Military, you must take action immediately. Now I know, in the last eight years, lower EMs have been allowed to ask for time outs, incorrectly wear their hair and uniform and mouth off. Time to get this corrected, immediately. Boot these buttheads out. They will only be trouble. And Cpl, grow a set.

First tell to at ease, then take him to a area away from the other soldiers and get to the bottom of why he did what he did. I would make it very clear of who he is and who I am and the consequences he could face for disrespect to an NCO. If he continues the disrespect then I would get the chain of command involved. I did have such an issue during Iraqi Freedom when I returned from Iraq after being injured and I took the position of PLT SGT and had a soldier who was more than disrespectful. I couldn't have him put in jail and had written him about 10+ times and had no success in correcting his attitude. He was eventually discharged.

I know what you vets are thinking but I am an nco in MCJROTC and I've had this happen a number of times, we take care of the situation pretty simply, first we tell them to slow theyre roll, if don't comply we fall them out talk, not working, open punishment to class easy. If that doesn't work then they get that boot.
His refusal in front of peers is unacceptable and should be addressed on the spot. During my stint during the last two years of the Vietnam war if this happened you would be taken out back a had an attitude adjustment. In today's world I am sure that is not allowed anymore but should be as it garnered respect.

Pain retains. I learned all my knowledge quick when I was a boot and never talked back to my seniors unless I wanted to spend the night in the front leaning rest or writing essays or the million other stupid games that can be played that don't involve getting the shit beat out of you. Then again now the corps is soft now and so is the rest of the country. This generation will ruin the military

Fan room consultations are still a thing. If the subordinate sailor is otherwise facing official action, he would probably prefer to "slip in the shower" over facing charges of insubordination.

LOR for insubordination. If further incidences, Article 15 and out the door. There is no room for his type of behavior. It disrupts morale and discipline and only serves to encourage others to adopt the same type of attitude.
