Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

No seriously - the little snowflake pulls this nonsense on me is going to discover the magical mysteries of the bilge for about 2 weeks followed by head duty for a month. And every time I have the duty I'll be standing at the brow to snag him as he attempts to leave the ship - so that he can help me with a special project that only one man with his magnificent skills can accomplish. They didn't call me "The Bone" when I ran A gang because of my ability to feed the dogs...

Being an E-5, I would first reassign him the duty he refused and let him know he is disobeying a lawful now. Then proceed with a write up. Address this with Chain of Command and give them a chance a assigning him the assignment.

First I calmly ask the private to follow me into my office. Once in the Office I ask him why he feels that he shouldn't do the tak presented to him? Then after listening to his BS answer I'd start witha counseling statement for disobeying a direct order. Then I would assign him the worst possible duties I could think of, and if he refused to do them I'd give 2nd counseling statement, and more duty, if he still failed to comply with his orders I would take him to the company commander and file formal charges for refusing a direct order, and have his lazy butt Article 15'd, and if that didn't work well then I guess I would either have the soldier court marshalled or shot, his choice.

In this "platoon or barracks environment" with multiples making up a team...shared assumption of tasks and responsibility is important. This superstar wants to standout...so let his teammates help him reach his goal. The whole team struggles until this maggot gets the recognition he is asking for from ALL his teammates. A good workout, calasthenics, cleaning drill and perhaps watch volunteering for all his peers will allow proper application of leadership from his peers. Of course this along with counseling and a written record/warning. He will either respond or make his next downward maneuver. NO ONE CAN CHANGE TODAYS YOUTH ANY FASTER THAN PEER PRESSURE. The strength is that of the WEAKEST link.

I have never believed in this whole PRAISE IN PUBLIC, PUNISH IN PRIVATE, BULLSHIT!
I WOULD SMOKE THE SHIT OUT PRIVATE FUCKTARD IN FRONT OF EVERYONE! That way NO ONE would question my authority again!
I know I would get some whining from higher ups but what the hell I still got my point acrossed ( It's better to ask for forgiveness then beg for permission)!

The fact that all my soldiers were initially councelled on what was expected by me of them, they already know the consequences to disobeying an order I have taken some rank, never took money directly as in article 15, and the first time I took rank was from a constantly tardy soldier, I had the 1SG with me when I councelled him, and recommended reduction in rank, from SPC to PFC, as he was signing it the 1SG asked him if he had read it? The soldier replied yes. The 1SG said you know he's recommending a reduction in rank, the soldier said, yeah but that's just a recommendation, the 1SG said, yes and now give me your rank go to supply and pickup your PFC rank.

Even as an E3, I understand we are asked to do things we dont like, but there is nothing command ask of you that they have not done a million and one times themselves to get where they are at in their career. Accept it and drive on. You signed a contract, we all did. It is a privilege to serve, but it is our duty to comply. Insubordination should not be tolerated. If you have an issue, you are part of a team. Compose yourself, and speak to your command after formation. This is what it truly means to serve your country.

I would issue this direct order one last time if same response from the E-2 he would be brought up on charges of refusing a direct order and face a captains mast and forced out of the Military and Dishonorably Discharged

There was a time when smart mouths were regulated to the mess hall grease pit. This usually resulted in a domino effect of fellow soldiers conducting a shower party with attention to eliminating the oder and the soldier getting his head screwed on right. Too, an article 18, can reduction in rank, forfeiture of pay heals the worse offender

I fall out the rest of the troops and have the E 2 stand fast. Once we are face to face, I explain to him how the chain of command works and why he will follow my orders or be written up and given extra duty for insubordination that he really doesn't want!!

Unfortunately he still wet behind the ears and doesn't really know what military bearing is. So he needs to be taught. You can meet him halfway by losing some of your military bearing and give him a little of what he's giving you to show him I haven't always wore this uniform either. Or stay in your Zone and handle him with paperwork

Well! I'm not going to comment on the now. This should have all been handled by the Drill Sargent that sent him to you. Being an old Drill myself we put out a lot before they ever got to permanent party, for this very thing. The Drills now are nothing more than babysitters. This country has gone soft and we ( the old salts of the earth ) need to try to bring back order and disapline to all the youngsters, military and nonmilitary. I don't blame the Drill Sargent their hands are tied also. People now have no respect for anyone to include themselves. That's what needs to chang and that starts in the home.

Coming from a Military School that made basic training in the Navy seem like child's play. I would inform the entire unit that due to one of it's members lack of military etiquette they would be drilling and running the next two days. If bye chance after said drilling and running they could pull together as a unit. There would be know need for any further enlightenment. Let the unit take care of it's own theology.

As a former FMF DOC I had this happen to me by a new Marine fresh out of boot. I gave him an order and I believe his response was " I don't take orders from a squid." Being taken back by the response I received for a brief moment, I paused before I told him to drop, and before I even had the chance to educate this young Devil Dog my Gunny just so happened to be walking up behind this youngster and snatched him up by his collar and made it crystal clear to this young Marine that he would never question an order from an NCO, and if he ever heard of him calling his DOC a squid again that he would take him to the wood shed. After the youngster was done being educated by my Gunny. He was excused, very tired and sweaty. My Gunny then turned to me and said. " DOC, if you ever hesitate to put another junior Marine in his place, I'll ensure you will feel more pain than all of that motrin stuff in the world won't be able to fix you". Needless to say, I never had a problem with a junior Marine or any other junior again.
That being said, it was a different time, but I still feel that the military should not change. Those moments of getting smoked, taken to the wood shed etc... Is what built character, and it ensured that all orders were followed without question or hesitation. So if in today's military orders are able to be questioned or blatantly disobeyed then it would create a disastrous result. So may answer to the question is simple.. Smoke that junior Soldier, Sailor, Marine or Airman. No questions, no hesitation. Period.

Hmmm..... My army career started at the ripe age of 7 yrs old when my dad enlisted. I quickly adapted to his "new style" of parenting that consisted of him controlling what was most important to me.... MY PERSONAL TIME!! Ass whoopins became ineffective to me by the age of 10 or 11. By the time I was 17 he was a SFC-E7. I was feeling kinda of froggy one day because I was tired of his treatment because "I was almost a man". Some how, I fixed my mouth to say the words 'NO"!!! And when I woke up....... I remember him telling me why he did it and if I did not respect him in "his house" I would not learn to respect others or myself in the future. Therefore, no one would ever have respect for me. Then he asked me what my problem was. 2 yrs later at the age of 19 I enlisted and it all became clear to me. Think before you do because there my be a problem with an individual personally and as leaders we need to get to the root of it. Also, when we pin that rank on some of us believe that it comes with superhuman strength. It does not. We don't hear about it much but I have witnessed a "dickhead" NCO get his ass kicked on a few occasions way before we started considering these new soldiers "bad apples". I stopped hollering and screaming my last 7 yrs of my career and I did my duty with a pen and readymade counselings. Less stress on me and a better understanding for each other. That was the best angle for me. Put a smile on your face while your doing it too. They hate that. LOL

If he didn't think it was right he should had use tack and pull him a side and told him why he did not think he should have to do it
You don't have we respect person but do have to respect the rank ask long as he out rank he he have to listen to him and if you don't think it right go to some one higher then him. That y we have a Chang of command
