Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

Hey what about having him dress in full battle gear and carry a rifle above his head for a 20 mile march at double time?

Calmly take him away from the rest of the formation, then smoke the ever loving dog shit out of him.

On my first trail as a DS
I was challenged by a PFC who felt he didn't need to practice D&C as he'd mastered it in JROTC
I assigned him to present a block of instruction that moment. I offered that he could teach me something possibly…
After embarrassing himself, being laughed at, completely screwing up his attempt explaining any part of D&C he began to tear up. I instructed PFC Dipshit to fall back in, silenced the laughing platoon and dropped everybody.

Where were that PFC's CPLs and why didn't anyone else life him out for disrespecting a SGT?

Dismiss everyone but that person, take them out behind the building and whoever walks away doesn't do the assignment. End of story. Anything else undermines the possible future of a life or death situation.

All this talk about coddling a Soldier and "understanding" their situation before you "overreact" is ridiculous. First of all, the Soldier in this situation is an adult and they have been through initial training and understand their obligations. Therefore, they are well aware that they must follow lawful orders. Failure to do so will result in a counseling and corrective training. Just make sure you are creative with the corrective training...
