Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

Obviously that kid didn't know his place in his formation luckily he's is still breathing, sad part is that punch probably costed the entire squad punishment. But he won't do it again I bet.

While in front of the rest of the troops I would repeat my original order while also stating that I was not asking him to do it, that I was telling him to do it and stating that this type of behavior would not be tolerated by him or any others.

simple drop him in front of the platoon and explain to him the chain of command then ask his squad leader why his man was getting out of line. then explain to them that was there first and only warning. they wont do that agen and if so the rest of the platoon will help keep them in line from then on. if not bring on ar15s for in subornation.

Been there done that. The first time, as an ETC I told the E5 to stand fast and I'd explain it to him one on one. I was onboard for 2 days at the time and had walked into an unmotivated shithole. The outgoing ETC wasn't a Chief, he was an E-7, big difference. The CWO missed being a Chief and had his hand on everything. I got the E-5's attention but it only lasted a couple months. The second time, everyone was watching to see if I'd hold my ground. After he'd interrupted quarters with a comment of "bullshit " about a tasking I took a deep breath and made eye contact. He was big eyed and scared. I said "ET2 Knucklehead meet me in the passageway...NOW. I put the LPO in charge and went out to wait for him. He stumbled outside all sweating and apologizing, Chief it slipped, never ever ever etc. I said look jackass, I've had enough. He got to stay late and wax decks and I made it clear that if there was ever another incident he wouldn't survive. I went back into quarters and finished up but sent him to berthing to start cleaning shitters. I found out later that some of the guys were wagering whether he was alive or not. I followed up by telling the outbound guy he couldn't come to quarters anymore and the told the Warrant he needed to go do Officer shit. The division had been slowly crumbling for awhile and it was the leaderships bust as much as the Sailors. They learned that we were back on track pretty quick and I didn't have hardly any trouble after that.

I would give the task to the rest of the troops as this E2 suggested. Then I'd find another less pleasant task for this E2 to perform under the watchful eye of the rest of the troops. Finally, I'd bring the individual into a private room where I'd explain the responsibility to work as a team or probably be ostraciaed by the others in his command.

Like the above comment, ask em to explain themselves after formation in private. If they are still defiant, I feel a 15 is a bit harsh as a first reaponce. Id vote for an LOR and volenteer the little shit for even more duties taking away some of their free time.

If the issue persists after, give em a 15 with work, possibly pay cuts.

OMFG he is right, there is another job for him and his Squad. I'd have all the other squad leader set forward, assign the additional work evenly between them. But before they depart they are to go in to the head and piss on anything and everything but the toilets and urinals. PFC nonqualdinkpuk and his squad will now commence to clean the company head with their fucking tooth brushes. After two hours a black light check to see how good a job is being done, they will stay there till the place in fucking spotless...

Continue handling our assignments and after finished release the rest for duty hold that one individual. Tell him one last time the job he is going to do if he says no again take him to next in command have him tell him the same thing plus give him extra duty or Article 15 or both and insure the rest know what happened.

E2, permanent assignment ? Take to Top for re-education or Article-15 recommendation. Disobeying orders in the barracks means your useless to ME, and this unit in the field.

He needs to learn his general orders and know what they mean to heart and that would require some hard core discipline to him and section leader shit rolls down hill

Tell the little shit to stand fast after formation. After formation is dismissed, explain to them their deficiencies in judgment when disobeying a lawful order given by an NCO. After which, they can have time to explain their behavior. Lastly, make your decision; let it go, or have him doing Iron Mike's 'till the walls sweat.

Wall to wall counseling always helped, that is right we don't do that anymore, so the next best thing is to work out that guttiness out of him

I was never in the military, But I have the GREATEST respect for all who serve. Learn your place, work together, become a leader or a follower. But show disrespect, whatever happens, you deserve it! Take time to learn about the people you serve, who have been through there time and came out on top. You might just learn something from them.

Not being one to punish in public, unless they absolutely bring it down on them self. Like this moron did when he disrespected an NCO in front of others. He'd get a firm ass chewing for everyone to hear, then stand fast, while everyone else carry on with the plan of the day. In the infantry I didn't have room for insubordination. That kinda crap gets people killed. So I'd punish in form of a heavy smoking, then I'd have to put that little smart ass pv2 on paper and nip his attitude in the butt.

Well I was a Staff Sergeant so I would open a portal to hell and let him know jumping down there was going to be more enjoyable than standing in front of me any longer.
