Here's the background. You're a senior E5. Your troops are in formation and you're handing out work for the day. You hand out an assignment to a fresh E2 with less than a year in and only a few months at your command. They blatantly complain and tell you to choose someone else. You calmly tell them they will do this task and they tell you to shove it and give it to someone else. How do you react?

I would remind the E2 that as property of the United States military, they no longer have the right to choose what they will or won't do, allow them an extremely brief amount of time to rephrase their jubilation on drawing that particular work detail.

When he is ready to hit the sack I enter the room and call him out for a night mission. He will be sorry the next day.

Pull the Pvt aside in view but private, explain in a direct way that to do as told helps squadmates. Then challenge him too see if that obstinate nature can be taught into a leadership qualities. Never be afraid to question your orders, just do it right.

What kind of leader were you? Maybe this pvt has gotten the wrong impression about you because you let others slide. Task and discipline must be consistent. Never had trouble like this in my 12 years in. Sometimes they might get lazy, but taking a weekend for training usually got them back on track
